I'm a big fan of alternate materials for guitars.

My favorite one so far has been a pre-peavey Composite Electric.
Though I have wanted to try the Flaxwood guitars and perhaps a kit from http://www.fibersonixx.com/ or Modulus parts.
Flaxwood has a nice model with a CC pickup that's been catching my eye.

Why the big manufacturers aren't getting on top of these advancements while blending their own know how to make the best of the old and new is beyond me.
Even the Firebird X would have gotten more of a chance if they had moved completely away from the concepts of tome woods and focused on the electronics package.
Could have went from WTF to Revolutionary.

I tried a CA Composite Acoustic a few years. I liked it and I remember thinking, "Man, it will sound amazing once it's broken in."

I had to facepalm myself.

If they can get the prices of good graphite composite guitars down to around $1,000 for a basic model, I wouldn't be surprised if they start to take over. A zero-maintenance acoustic is just too appealing. And you don't have to deal with wood import and sustainability issues.

Somebody earlier in this thread mentioned my dad, Joel Cawthorn, who build guitars. Just thought I'd share pics of some that he made ... There's a grainy pic of one he made for Jerry Garcia, and some better pics of one that I acquired in NYC in 1994 from a music shop in SOHO several years after he passed away (the white onyx one).

I've lusted after various aluminum necked (ala Travis Bean) for a loooong time now... I guess they're often wood body (not always - see Electrical Guitars), just non-wood neck.

This is my Emerald X7, all one piece (neck, top, back, sides, bridge) of carbon fiber. It has ridden in the overhead bin of every flight I've taken for the past two years and has so far proven to be bulletproof. It also sounds pretty nice.

Acryics tried to catch on in the 80s. I've never played one, so can't comment. The LP below is unique in that even the neck is acrylic.
