Finished up recording Back In Black.

User Error
Well, I finished it up last night. Here it is:

Back In Black

The theme was 'First Track', and since I grew up listening to the cassette, I didn't realize that Back in Black was actually the first track on side two. :facepalm:

Anyway, I used the Barber Direct Drive Super Sport for all the overdrive tones.

Bass - MIA Jazz Bass into Bassman mic'd with AKG C4000B
Left Guitar - Edwards P90 Goldtop into Barber into Classic 50 clean channel into 412 cab loaded with Celestion G12K85s.
Right Guitar - Same as left, only used Agile AS820 (ES335 copy).
Leads - '98 Gibson LP into Barber into Fender Bassman into the the 412 cab above (rewired for 4 ohms).

All guitars were mic'd with an SM57.

I think the rhythm tones especially are great. I think I could have dialed the leads in a little better, but they'll do.

Now I just need to dial in some higher gains sounds with the pedal. :embarrassed:

Yeah, I think I really nailed the tone on this one.

I'm doing all of it...drums, bass, guitars, and singing.

The singing is even as close as I've ever heard any other cover of this song.

The vocals are definitely the hardest part of the song.

I basically did about 2 lines at a time. I ended up with three tracks of lead vocals that I spliced together to get one good track. It came out well though. There's really only one place that I can really tell that it's not all done in one take, and that's sometime in the second verse...can't remember exactly where without hearing it though.

I can do that.

You want all the guitars muted? Howabout the vocals? I can even do a version with the bass muted, so you guys can practice your AC/DC bass playin'. :grin:

I think it would be fun to try to reproduce the guitars ... I can't play drums, sing or get decent bass recording tho. biggrin

When I get home this evening, I'll mute the guitars and try to get it uploaded. I've been having problems uploading from home, though, so I might not be able to get it uploaded until tomorrow morning.

We got a wireless card a couple of months ago. It's a lot faster than the dialup was, but we still don't get really fast speeds with it. The fastest I've seen is something like 185 kbps. But for some reason, my FTP software doesn't like it. It's timing out or something, and I can't find any way to change the settings on it. It never timed out with the dialup, and I didn't change anything in my FTP software, so I don't know what the problem is. It usually gets to about 40% of an mp3 and then times out. idn_smilie
 
Absolutely awesome. You really know how to not only nail the physical part of playing the song but you get the vibe really good, too!
 
On a side note, in the process of rewiring my 412 cabinet, I managed to slice my right thumb pretty good. :facepalm:

I couldn't find my wire strippers, so I was using a utility knive and ended up cutting pretty deeply into my thumb.

It didn't really hurt too bad when it happened since the knife was so sharp, but it bled a lot, and it's pretty sore today. :facepalm:

So, I bled for rock and roll. :grin:

I think a lot of capturing the vibe is in the drums.

I'm a terrible drummer, but with a lot of the cover songs, I'll actually pump the original track through my headphones and play drums along to the original. It seems to work well, and doesn't require that I do a scratch track on the guitar or anything.

Once I get the drums pretty close, then I can start layering stuff over them.

This one turned out a lot better than I figured it would. I really can't believe how good the rhythm guitars sound on it.

The drums are really key in this song. If they aren't played with the right feel the song won't work.

I see you used your Direct Drive quite a bit, too :)

Yeah, all the guitars went through the Direct Drive. The rhythms then went into my Classic 50, and the leads into the Bassman.
 
Wow dude. Once again you blow me away. You are one freakin' impressive musician.
