Finally buying a grill soon... suggestions?

I wanted a Weber since I know they're supposed to be the best, but they're a little steep seeing as I'll have a lot of other expenses when I move into my new place. I was checking this out:

Dual propane/charcoal grill & smoker. Covers all bases, but I'm not sure about the quality of Brinkmann grills.

If it's cheap enough, get it. It'll last a couple years and maybe by then you'll be in a position to get the Weber Genesis Stainless ($799 at Home Depot). Brinkmann designs nice grills, but their materials aren't very high quality.

I bought a Char-Broil Red to save a couple hundred bucks and I'm really sorry I did that. It's not a bad grill, but the last Weber I had lasted me 9 years. Then I bought a really expensive TEC grill ($1400) and it lasted me 8 years (in fact, it still works, I just need to replace some parts on it). I can't see this Char-Broil lasting another year or so.

That's the thing with Webers, they're more expensive but they last a long time so it might be a better investment just to go that route.

+1 one on the Weber Genesis, I bought one in the late fall for $600.00 at Homedepot. My last grill was a Brinkman, good grill did what a grill should do. It lasted about 6 years but I did not get as hot as the Weber does. The Weber is a far better grill if you can swing it.

I should add, if your really into grilling as I am, there are many more optional attachments for the Weber.

Here's the thing about smokers. Good smoked meat requires constant temperature. Down south, you can buy a cheap one because it never gets too cold and your temp will not fluctuate much. Up north, you need a really high quality insulated smoker (thicker metal, etc.), and that can get expensive. The Brinkman would be great for down here, but might not perform well during the winter up north. It seems to be made of about the same material as my New Braunfels smoker. If it is, it will be a pain in the ass to smoke in the cold.

Webers are the Cadillac of grills and worth every penny. My next gas grill will be a Weber.

Right now I have a Vermont Castings grill and it has withstood tons of grilling and the Colorado winters pretty good for about 4 years now, they are a good brand if you cannot swing the Weber.

I have a Vermont Castings gas grill. Everything is awesome, but the burners seem a little underpowered. I'd like to be able to get 600 degrees Fahrenheit without having to close the lid.

I think you can still get a Weber for around $450. It sounds like a lot if you are looking at cheaper grills but in my experience, very much wort it. The customer service is fantastic and the warrantees are great. I have a neighbor who has a Weber that has been completely rebuilt through the warrantee process. There isnt an original part left on it. It isnt normal that they wear out but this grill had been abused by it's previous owner. I had a Weber that I replaced the burners just short of 10 years after getting it. Everything else was fine.

The other benefit is that they really do cook even and you dont have to worry about flare ups. I personally dont like those combo grills. I would think they would do a half assed job of grilling or smoking.

This is true. I'd had a combo grill once and like Johnny says they do smoke and grill, but they don't do either one very well.

Yeah - I do agree with that. It really does not get hot enough to properly cook a steak - but most gas grills won't.

Never heard of Vermont Castings, don't know if I can even get one of those around here. Leaning towards an entry-level Weber at this point, no way I can spend $800 on a stainless steel model at this juncture. :embarrassed:

When I want to do it right, I pull out this little cast iron charcoal grill my parents gave me. If you do it right, charcoal can get pretty dern hot.

I had the 3 burner Genisis Silver or whatever it was called and it was about $450. We cook for large groups a lot so it lacked size once in a while but for a family, you really would have a hard time beating it.
