So I answer an a a few weeks ago looking for a guitar player to do a cover thing. The guys were in their late 30’s early 40’s. They answer my response and send a list of songs to learn. Nothing crazy in there so all good. They also mention they gave “pro gear” and want to make sure I do as well. I thought that was odd but I give them a list of my stuff.

The email I get back is priceless. “We said we want pro gear! That means Fenders, Gibson’s and Marshall’s. Are you kidding with Music Man, Reverend, and Orange Amps. We’ve never heard of that Chinese crap!” :facepalm:

Looks like I dodged a bullet there. This is actually the second time I’ve had the same conversation with different bands. Is this a thing? What the hell?
 
I would ignore anyone that insisted on anything beyond 'gigable gear'. I mean, you need an amp you can play a club with (clean and dirty, loud enough), and a guitar that stays in tune. After that, who cares what the gear is?

yea....that sounds pretty sketchy.
if you'd have replied that you had a 'vintage' Gorilla amp and Teisco Del Ray.....THEN i might have been a bit worried.

You would think if you are going to have that attitude you’d at least know what you’re talking about and not make a jackass out of yourself. You’ve never heard of Orange or Ernie Ball? Seriously? I’ll give them a pass on Reverend.

Or if gear quality was an issue, one could simply google and see what these things cost, read reviews, etc.

You would think. I started to type a snarky reply in that vain, but then regained sanity and figured why bother.
 
A MusicMan guitar? What kind of hack would play one of those? Well...there is this guy, I guess.

Heck, the bass player for MindMaze uses an SX bass as his main bass. Those are what, $100? $150 brand-new?
 
The Pro Gear, Pro Attitude is bogus. It is just a way to somewhat ween the beginners. FWIW, if they have to put that statement down, there is a good chance that they are not worthy. Just during a phone/email conversation, the one conducting the interview will already know the answer by how the other party answers.

I could only imagine if I had thrown that into the mix. I left it out since i feel it needs to be heard.
