Cheap but good guitar with a Floyd?

I played a Sterling by MusicMan SUB AX4 in GC yesterday. It was $329 and really impressed me. It had the asymmetrical neck shape, like the Axis and EVH and a decent enough Floyd Rose (you could drop a Floyd Rose Special on there for a big upgrade and it would be a FANTASTIC guitar.

Was that the price brand new? A quick google search didn't bring up that exact model for sale (just the sterling specs site). Might have missed it though, my iPhone is acting up a lot. Looks promising.

It's not coming up anywhere online for sale, oddly, but yeah, that's brand new.

Hmmm...didn't know they came out witha AX4. :cool:
 
I agree with the Ibanez recommendation from earlier. IMO, you don't want to be anywhere near a cheap floyd. If you want cheap, especially if you'll have to take the neck off of the guitar for transport, stick with a hardtail.
 
Thanks for all the great advice everyone. I ended up getting a red Hofner Shorty. It was only $150 on Amazon and free 2 day shipping with Prime. Plus $10 for Uncle Sam. Fixed bridge, bolt on neck, and when this set of cruises is over, I can either flip it or hand it over to my son as his first electric. Or leave it behind and not feel too bad about it. There were some really cool limited edition ones too (metalic orange, green, gold top...) but they weren't through prime so the higher price plus shipping costs were just too high to warrant a nifty color.

I really like mine. I did have to do a quick steel wool on the frets, they were very tacky, then I threw some lemon oil on the fret board. Put on some new strings and it plays like a dream.

I think it was some kind of crap on them and it was probably from the terrible strings that came on it. My fingers were black after I played it out of the box. I may have been able to just wipe them clean with the lemon oil, but I had some fine steel wool on the bench, so I ran over it. I may have spent a minute and a half on the entire fretboard with the steel wool, I am talking minimal time with it.

I have yet to play anything at GC that doesn't need a major set up. :messedup:

What was the process like restringing? Did you have to take the bridge off/apart in order to get the strings in?

I don't think I had to take the bridge off, but I did. I have never owned a guitar with a bridge like it, so I wanted to see the underside of it. I haven't restrung it since. Once you take all of the strings off, the bridge just comes off.
 
OK, I played that blue one and there was a trans black one right next to it. The blue one needed a setup but the black one was good. I'm impressed. I'd probably swap pickups, but the basic tone is nice.
