Any suggestions on a good inexpensive bass??

That's weird. You guys are missing out then imo.
A case of it NOT being made in the US?

My drumkit, bass and acoustic (and hifi) are all Yamaha. Quality stuff. :)

You can find Yamaha Drums at a lot of specialty drum shops, but GC or Sam Ash will only have a few pieces. Electric bass and guitar is almost non-existent. I used to work at a dealer who carried them, but they never sold and now they don't carry Yamaha at all. Surprisingly, they're one of the few Godin dealers and those sell great!

Squire is a great suggestion. the quality has improved quite a bit.

the Mexican Fenders are good as well and a used one should be in your price range.

i'd go for a P style like Terry posted above. elegant simplicity and it will sound good in any setting. butu a big chunky neck.

but something with a thin jazz neck might be more comfortable for your guitarist fingers, like the Jaguar,or an Ibanez. try out a bunch of different basses. if it's for a 1xmonth church gig, go with what feels good in your hands.

if you might also use it for recording, get a P.

I have 2 P-basses, one fretted, one fretless, and I find I really prefer that baseball bat-sized neck...had a J-bass for about a year and didn't care for that skinnier neck, much to my surprise!

I saw one of the Squier Jaguar basses on sale at by local Best Buy for $139 and almost bought it. I don't know much about basses, but the action seemed really high. Maybe that's why it was on sale.

If these are 1/10th as good as the regular Musicman ones, it would be awesome.

I have one of these as does my bass player, he also has a 5 string 1500.00 musicman and loves this model just as much...you cannot buy a bass for this price with the attention to detail, electronics and playability, PERIOD! Order a hipshot drop tuner for the E-string and it is done. You flip it and you are in drop D instantly and away you go. These are made in Indonesia and then come to the Cali plant for set-up and QA, they are the real deal right out of the box, ready to gig with, I got mine when they first came out and got an additional 30.00 off from it around the holidays and think it was 229.00 total! It is far better than any Squire bass I would put it up against any MIM Fender Bass and it would beat it too.

My only complaints about the Squiers:

Body too light, neck too skinny. But I realize I'm in the minority there.

Yep, they do skimp out on body wood and therefore weight. The Classic Vibe P-bass has a pretty thick neck in comparison to most of the other Squier basses.

The SUB bass has the same pickup and electronics that they put in the American basses except it doesn't have one knob that is part of the EQ system makes it a 2way instead of a 3way system. I don't recall if it splits into the single coil or not. Also, it is not neck heavy.
