Any suggestions on a good inexpensive bass??

Right now I am playing a low end SX bass i bought for #3 son when he said he wanted to learn. I think the bass, cheap gig bag, and small amp were a combined $125.00 new.

I plays ok and sounds decent, but I do want to upgrade since I am playing bass about once a month now (at church). I am probably looking used and would like to stay under $250.00 - though $300.00 is possible. I'd love to get a better bass than that - but budget dictates that this is all I can spend. I know a lot less about bass guitars than I do electrics so help me out a bit here.

And nothing pointy Peeker.....

Squire vintage modified jaguar bass for the win. I'm a smaller guy, so I got the short sale model, but it's pretty fantastic.

Another vote for the Squier vintage modified. I love my short scale. The normal one has got to be great, too.

There are plenty of Squier Vintage Modified basses in your price range. I love my short scale Jag bass. I'm GASing for the $199 Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special HB 34" scale...

I picked up my old Vintage Mod J Bass for $100 on Craigslist.

Those are really hard to find used around here.

As I own one, I can imagine why. :)

My BB405 cost me about 500, and I can't ever see that I'd be tempted to sell it.
Kickass instrument for a very reasonable price. :)

It's more a case of there aren't many Yamaha dealers in the States that stock more than acoustics or the low end Pacificas.

That's weird. You guys are missing out then imo.
A case of it NOT being made in the US?

My drumkit, bass and acoustic (and hifi) are all Yamaha. Quality stuff. :)

you can find $100 Yamaha basses and acoustics all day. its the midline stuff that's gone missing. they're nowhere to be found in GC and Sam Ash only has a few pieces. i don't think it has anything to do with country of origin and everything to do with deals cut by retailers. remember, MI isn't Yamaha's only business. It is the only business of the three other top guitar manufacturers: Fender, Gibson, and Ibanez.
