I suppose $25M/yr is acceptable in today's MLB market for a premier 26 year old gun, but to gamble that he's still going to merit such a salary by age 39 in a sport with very few 39 year old players is pure insanity. Much more so because he's a pitcher.

You might still be a damn good right fielder while knocking on 40's front door, but the attrition rate for pitchers is magnitudes higher than position players. One wrong movement during a throw can end a career at any age. This is the stupidest contract I've ever seen. I guess the Phillies front office is hedging on him getting them some rings before his arm blows up and that will offset the ludicrous outlay of cash. Rings are good for ticket and merch sales. If he hits 30 before they win a WS title, they're in big trouble.

Getting paid money now has a hell of a lot more buying/earning power than money deferred for 3-4 decades. He's guaranteed his $330M by age 39 even if he never plays a game. Choosing not to defer money was the smart move for Harper. But still, it seems like Harper compromised a hell of a lot just so Boras could get the biggest deal in baseball (for now). I'm pretty sure Philly wasn't even on his shortlist 12 months ago.

While technically more money, Harper's deal is worse than Machado's and Stanton's, who will out-earn Harper for nearly a decade (more money to invest earlier) with better career options and neither defer any money either.

Machado (who dropped Boras) has $30M/year guaranteed, a choice of teams he can be traded to and an opt up if he feels he can do better. He only has to deal with Ca. income tax and the fact that the Padres are crap in a cap so he'll languish for a while.

Pretty sure they are betting Harper will put the butts in the seats. That was his real earning potential for the Nats. He wasn't the game-charger on field that I think many imagined he was, but he he was fun to watch and sold a lot of tickets and jerseys.

Harper is an outfielder, not a pitcher.
 
The Harper signing is a bargain for the Phillies.

They are immediately competitive. Further, they make a statement that they are not also rans, which is significant for them. And if he avoids a career-altering injury, they'll nail down part of a core for success for a long time.

The Phillies will spend much of that time gettin smacked down by the Red Sox, Yankees, and Astros.
 
The Red Sox face a nearly impossible task with the upcoming contracts: Betts; Bogaerts; Sale.

We all know Mookie's priority 1, and ownership spoke recently about how badly they botched the attempt at resigning Lester. But I don't think we can afford Xander, and I don't think we should pay what others will surely pay Sale. He's just too fragile.
