The game has changed, but so has the market. I agree the 10 year, $300 million contract is bad. The 5 year, $150 million contract is way better. What's interesting to me is how the free agent market has slowed and everyone waits for those guys to sign before determining the market for everyone else now. Pitchers and catchers have already reported and the majority of the free agent class is still home twiddling their thumbs. The MLBPA has been a disaster for the players in that regard for at least the past three seasons.

I am totally onboard with the 5 year deals. The Rockies are up against this with Arenado next season if they don't get a deal done now (which they won't). From a player perspective I get the ten year deals. But Arenado will make $26 million this season. Even taking out the agent cut and taxes both he and his family are set for life based on this season alone. Ten years contracts very rarely work out well for anyone except the player and the agent.

You're talking about the same team that knowingly signed Milton Bradley... a guy so malignant that Manager Bruce Bochy had to tackle him with enough force to effectively end his career. Manny ain't got shit on Milton.

They survived Kevin Brown, they survived Jack Clark... Manny is just a walk in the (Petco) Park.

He was an Elite Level Asshole. We're talking top .00001% of assholes. But... when he was on your team's bench waiting to pinch hit, he was YOUR Asshole!

I remember very fondly going to a day game when the Padres played at Jack Murphy (Qualcomm) stadium against the Giants. As usually was the case, starting catcher Benito Santiago did not start as it was a day game. Benito came in to pinch hit, and Jeff Brantley (the fuckin' prick) nailed poor Benny in a clearly purposeful way, so hard that it broke Benny's arm. That left us with NO catcher. After some kerfuffle, little itty bitty Joey Cora came out of the dugout in catcher's gear. It was a hilarious sight to behold. The chest guard was nearly bigger than he was. The Padres were in trouble. So, into extra innings we went. The stalemate would not break. In came Jack Clark from the bench... BAM! DINGER! GAME OVER. :)

When Clark was on the Red Sox, there was a situation where he apparently used an aggressive f-bomb to decline a request from a little kid for an autograph.

Not exactly what bluenose New Englanders like from their Red Sox.

Clark made Mike Marshall look like a breath of fresh air.

Apparently the Rockies got the contract extension with Arenado done. 8 years $260 million with an opt out clause after 3 years. But in 3 years Arenado will be 31 and not likely to get a better offer. $32.5 million a season.
 
Harper has a 10 yr/ 30 mill with a 5 yr opt out deal on the table but wants a 3 yr opt out clause.
 
And Harper signs a 13 year deal, $330 mill, no opt out clause. Not sure that was a wise move by the Phillies. His being hurt two years ago and his crappy year last year (for a player getting that kind of cash) kinda send up warning signs for me. At least it spreads the cash out over a longer period of time should he have a huge drop off in four or five years. But 13 years? Seriously??

I'm happy as hell, Harper has killed the Phillies singlehandedly over the last couple years. Thought for sure he was going to the Dodgers. And two weeks ago, there was a false report he signed with the Yankees.

No one would pay Harper what Philly would. Dodgers didn’t need him and would only guarantee $150M of $300M; Nats wanted to defer their $300M over 30 years, with most of it coming after the 10-year contract was up (some believe the MLB wouldn’t have allowed that deal to go through anyway).

Phillies can use Harper, their pitching and defense are 4th in their division, so offense may offset that. While he won’t fade into obscurity, it feels like he shackled himself to a team he had to settle for without insisting on opt outs. Meanwhile, Manny will out-gross Bryce for a few years in San Diego then end up traded to the Yankees anyway.

Meanwhile, as an O’s fan, it’ll be another rough year, even their giveaways suck this year.

The Phillies didn’t just improve five wins. They took those wins away from the Nationals. Now they could contend with Atlanta for the division. Conversely, the Mets, Nats, and Marlins are all dumpster fires. That said, fuck Harper and the Phillies. I can’t wait for their insufferable fans to boo him.

As a I understand it, the Nats contract offer had quite a bit of deferred money but didn’t have the juicy Bonilla interest kicker. Perhaps he could’ve negotiated for that, but alas.

Point is, he might’ve been able to get himself a sweet BB deal but he didn’t...because he’s a massive douche.
