I don't think people will put up with a bad band anywhere but here they just want what they're familiar with...actually listening to something new takes too much work.
 
I can't comment, from an elevated perspective. I've done worse.
This bassist who started a band with me began drinking, what used to be his problem.
His wife started phoning me, talking about he got kicked off the company hockey team for fighting,
drinking too much, and now drinking again with our band.

He got bad, even if he maintained his playing ability, so one night I decided to push it.
While I was soloing, I walked around behind him and kicked him in the ass, enough to move him.
He stumbled forward off the over foot high stage, onto the dance floor, but kept his head down, still playing.

That was enough to make everyone sit down and discuss it, the band deciding to fold in two weeks.
The keyboardist and I had other reasons to go our seperate ways,
but that involved him and his father, and me naked under a blanket with a new girlfriend.
And nothing was determined to be passive, electronically, or passive-aggressive, emotionally.

If you got the beat steady for the dance floor, look good and have your music, uh, memorized,
that should be enough to go over anywhere.

I think the genius of the way they do music is they have their own unique sound...

... so when they do covers, they are changed to "their sound" (the pop/reggae/funky style) and plus they mix things up by changing instruments... and their originals are so catchy that they co-exist side by side with (or in many cases have people dancing as much or more than) the covers.

It helps to have the vibe they do, which I think lends itself to that approach.

The way we did it was basically starting out as a cover band, and gradually sneaking in more and more originals (some of which are really catchy stuff) - while keeping the covers that work well, usually having one of those after each 2 or 3 originals/less known tunes.
It's amazing what you can get away with doing it that way. :wink:
 
That actually makes me feel better about my own lead playing - and that takes a lot. A whole lot of suck in that solo.

despite the solo being superawesomecool, that was a pretty lame-o thing on the singer's part.
mind ya, seems to me the whole band could have maybe used a slap...hard to say.

as for original bands getting paid, MUNG's an original band.
and I'd take home more $$ doing 2 gigs a month than I would working a fulltime job.
but we've been around a loooooonnngg time.
just sayin'...

I can only play a solo from one song and have no real improvising skills whatsoever and that boosted my confidence. My double stops with little 1/4 step bends are sounding pretty dang good right now.

My favorite part is he stumbles and stumbles and then just kind of gives up. Then the singer smacks him as if he is the one keeping them from going big time. I even knew it was coming and it surpised me.
