Whenever I'm in the South Bay area, I tend to head over to Hermosa Beach for a while. Grab a beer and one of the patio places and watch folks go by on the walk. There are several restaurants there too. If you like Brazilian style BBQ, try Silvio's, or head to Hennessey's balcony for some British pub food and a great view. If you're there after dark, the Lighthouse Cafe has bands most nights and usually no cover charge. Next beach north is Manhattan beach, similar to Hermosa but more upscale and more shops & restaurants. Both, to me, are the quintessential SoCal beach towns, with Hermosa being my preference. If you want to really do the South Bay beach thing, rent some bicycles at Redondo Beach and ride all the way to Santa Monica. It's only about 16 mi. each way, but plenty of distractions along the way and a fun way to spend a day.

The 13th? You are in luck. There's a Coldplay tribute band playing by the airport that day. Maybe take in a 2-7 Chargers football game too.
I'm not sure why I've been picking on Coldplay. They aren't that bad.

There are thousands of worthwhile eateries, and of course: beaches aplenty. I commuted there a few years, and when I wanted to sort of 'show' southern California to people I'd look for emblematic half-day experiences.
* Driving through the Hollywood hills into the Valley (briefly), then down Topanga Canyon to Malibu. Option to swing north to Zuma. (Route: Beverly Glen > Mulholland > 405 > Ventura Blvd > Topanga > PCH). A few hours, but you see an amazing dose of Los Angeles - opulent homes, 'the Valley,' the beautiful wilds of Topanga (and the dissipated, rich hippie evocation of Neil Young's 70's trilogy) and finally the beach.
* Since there are so many people, maybe just: people watch? Melrose Ave., Venice Beach.
* There's a driving range at Griffith Park where you can hit a couple of buckets of balls for cheap, and if you take the 'upstairs tier,' there's a decent view of Glendale/Pasadena. Fun way to kill an hour, and you can swing back east to hipsterville without too much traffic.
* Manhattan Beach. The beach, not the town. It's near LAX, reasonably beach-y, and although there's not a lot of parking, I've always found a space within easy walking distance.
Shout out for Eagle Rock Brewing in Glendale. Some very good beers.

Awesome! It's the first "real" show for this band so I'm pretty excited.
