Whadday'all thinka the Gorillaz?

I loved the first two "real" albums, eponymous debut and Demon Days. I've not Listened to The Fall album really at all, but I very much enjoyed the Plastic Beach album, despite too many collaborations.

Today I've been listening to the new album and it's really just a collaboration album with only one song that's just the "band"...unfortunately it's the only tune I really like so far. It's great that I like it, but lame that it's the only tune that sounds like the band.

Anyway, the Gorillaz...what say ye?

Demon Days is their best record. I liked The Fall more than most people. Blur was/is a wonderful band. But sometimes Albarn's studied bleakness can become a bit much. I'd like to see him do a head-to-head collab with someone who had a little bit more oomph in his/her general approach.

If only to mitigate the general downtempo misanthropic mood that has become Albarn's default mode over the last 10+ years.

Yeah -- it's pretty nice for corporate pop. Haven't heard that much since Demon Days, but what I have heard has been well done.

Not to bust open this can of worms again, but how do you define corporate pop? I just want to get a handle on what you're saying.

Well they came out rather close to each other and the Fall was almost more of an experiment that a fully realized album. Not that it's bad, but it was as much a challenge to technology as the band themselves to make an album only using an iPad. I think of it more as an EP and exercise than a real album. It was thrown together quickly and not intended for release on a broad scale...a fan club giveaway initially.

Not to bust open this can of worms again, but how do you define corporate pop? I just want to get a handle on what you're saying.

Essentially, much like the Monkees in the 70s up through the various incarnations of pop-stars, teen-idols, etc. (e.g. Britney, David Cassidy, etc.) it is music that is written and produced by studio musicians and released fronted by a telegenic "image" (in the case of Gorillaz, a cartoon). I don't necessarily mean it as a disparaging adjective -- rather it is simply descriptive of the process. If I am incorrect, I will take no umbrage at any differing opinions!

Yeah, it's still one of the coolest musical takes on concept art. Forget a side or a whole album (or double album) as a large and unfolding story. They created a concept band, but unlike Derek and the Dominoes they made it a truly fictional multimedia work. They had me the first time I heard/saw the Clint Eastwood video. After that I only ever saw two other vids, but I love listening to Gorillaz and Demon Days. For months I was loving Plastic Beach too...I'll need to revisit that one too.
