Dental pain sucks.....

About 16 months ago I had to have two teeth extracted - one wisdom tooth and the molar next to it. About 6 months ago part of the root from the molar poked though the gums. I thought nothing of it until my next cleaning when the dentist said it should probably eventually be fixed since it is not supposed to be there. But it was not causing any issues.

Fast forward to this weekend. The root section started getting a bit sore on Friday. Saturday it start aching a bit during my run so I cut the run short. Saturday night I was eating pizza and a piece of hard crust got crunched right on that root section. It felt like I had been shot in the jaw. It took about 45 minutes to calm the pain down. This was new because I crew stuff over there all the time. Last night it started throbbing. Took a couple ibuprofen. Did nothing. Luckily I still had about ten pain meds left from the actual extraction so I am taking those. Got no sleep last night and I cannot see the oral surgeon until tomorrow afternoon.
 
How the "F" did the person who did the extractions leave a root? Is it just me, or does that sound like malpractice?!? :zoinks:

IDK.....

My question is since they are going to probably have to 'dig them out' instead of just pull them am I going to be charged? I do not even know if it is common or if I am in line not wanting to pay for it. I am not really a big confrontational type person but if it is expensive I think I will bring something up. That or hire Mrs Wein to 'negotiate' for me since Mark has assured us that is a skill she possesses.
 
Get thee to an oral surgeon if not already...that's no job for a dentist...

After reading up a bit apparently leaving the roots, or root, is not uncommon at all. Still hurts like heck. Well - it would if I was not taking hydrocodone.

I have recently had tooth pain.
Ibuprofin didn't touch it......even the prescription stuff the dentist gave me......

Alleve, man. I'm telling you. I don't know why, but it works.
 
I have been to the ER twice in my life. Once was when I thought I was having a heart attack and the other was for a tooth. During a dental check the dentist put a temporary filling in a tooth that he said would need a root canal. I later found out that when they do that, they should out some kind of antibiotic on the tooth before the filing. So after the novocaine wore off, it felt like someone was driving a nail into my tooth with a hammer. It was by far the most painful experience of my life. That includes 2 broken legs, cancer treatment (spinal taps, surgery, bone marrow samples) and gout.
 
Mojo. I've broken my femur, my jaw, and had a compound fracture of both bones in my left forearm...and none compared to the pain of an infected molar that needed a root canal. I'm not kidding. I've never experienced pain that bad. I guess Chad feels the same way.

The two worst spots for pain to me are dental and lower back. and the lower back was not constant - the dental is.
 
Alleve, man......give it a shot.

I don't know why, but it is the only thing that touches the pain for me.
I'm not a "pill" kind of guy, and rarely use aspirin, ibuprofin, etc....but that Alleve stuff is worth its' weight in gold.
I actually have a stash of "real" pain meds that I have access to, but I always go for the Alleve stuff. Cheap and it works.

There is a good chance there is an abscess, and if so, it will require an oral surgeon. I had a root canal done because of a cracked and abscessed tooth. Four months later, I was back in the oral surgeon's office because it abscessed again. Yes, there was an additional fee, because "they do that sometimes."
 
I can sympathize. A year ago I went for a root canal. The dentist was a beautiful Swedish woman who talked me into getting the tooth next to the bad one done as well. After nearly three hours, the last one after the Novocaine had just about worn out, she finished. It never stopped hurting and six months later I go back only to find that dentist was "no longer with the office". So I have to pay for a retreat on the same tooth. A month ago the fucking thing started to hurt again. I go back to the dentist and he said that he can't retreat it, but he can open up the inside of my gum, cut through my jawbone and take off the tip of the root of the tooth. He gave me an estimate of $1800.00 for the work, which insurance doesn't cover. He gave me some antibiotics and within a couple days it stopped hurting. So now I just have to wait and see if it happens again. If it does, it's coming out.
