The Explorer Kit Guitar Project

One of them. They make a few. The Crimson Express Color looks like it might work well.

I used a different type...polyshades...it took some effort to get an even color out of it, then I had to switch to straight polyurethane for the subsequent coats...not sure what you're looking at is the same...

I was originally looking at the PolyShades, but the colors don't look appealing to me.

wait, so you are replacing the bridge?
how come?

is the "stock" one that bad?

am I gonna have to worry about buying a bunch of new shit for my kit?

The bridge that came with it is the same sort of bridge that el cheapo Chinese LP copies come with and the old Epiphones. It's functional and all but I'd end up replacing it eventually anyway, so I figured why not do it during the build.

ah, cool.
since mine will be a beater gig thing, I am hoping I don't have to replace anything.
pups are a non-worry, my sound is noisy enough it won't matter

I just want the damn thing to stay in tune.
that'll make me happy

Yeah, I'm trying to keep this on a budget, which is why I'm glad I found the right TonePros cheap (which is still not really cheap, but...).

Pickups are my next worry, but I'm trying to figure out something on the cheap there, too. I was thinking of getting Epiphone Probuckers used, but they're hard to find! I guess people actually like them. They're supposed to be Toneriders (like the Squier CV pickups are Toneriders), so maybe I'll just pick up a set of Tonerider AC4s. If I get a cash influx maybe I'll have Bryan Gunsher wind me something, if he'll make me humbuckers again.

I have only once ever swapped out a p.up in a guitar
it was a cheapie Kramer (which I miss more than me Da)
put a Dimarzio ( I think) in it....
hot as hell
we did Euro-style speed metal at the time (think Kreator)
worked great.

that was 1988 or so

haven't chaged a p.up since
and no desire to do so

the one thing that worries me about these kits is the tuners

Well, the pickups that come with these kits are the cheapest of cheap. They have two stud coils each and are hot as snot, so they'll just be muddy.

The tuners, incidentally, seem pretty decent. They're a Gotoh style sealed tuner. I've sure as hell used worse without any tuning issues.

awesome, good to hear.

like I said, shitty p.ups are good for me
bass with a shit-ton of grind, it ain't gonna matter much.

I'm really excited to get mine, but it's gonna be a couple months.

hate waiting....but I'll have an Iceman bass eventually

yes, I finally decided

As far as the stain goes, I would go to home depot and see if you can find some pieces of scrap lumber in the same type of wood. Stain those first to make sure it's something you want!
