The Biking Thread

I'm glad this biking thread seems to be the most popular thread. I prefer mountain biking myself as I dont trust cars much. Plus i'm a dirt guy. What's the worst thing that could happen? You bust your hand and cant play guitar? No. Getting snatched by the neck by a mountain lion tops that. Fortunately I have yet to sustain any significant injuries. My worst was going over the bars due to my bar ends hooking on a bush while going to fast on a night ride. I got a mild concussion from that one. It's all part of the process right? (No Andy). All in all I will take measures to not get injured and enjoy biking as long as I can. I will take a little risk over spin class all day long. I'm digging the tubeless vs tubes debate. I'm running tubeless now. It is a pain when you have to re seal though.

I bought my first MTB in '85 and was hooked. Overjoyed riding trails all over the US and even Mexico. Sadly, recent joint issues in my neck, lumbar, and right hand keep me off the trails.

I still ride road, but had to cut back my time on the bike quite a bit.

Sorry to hear. You’re off the trails temporarily or for good? Mojo sent.

I'm kind of anti electric bike if you are healthy enough to ride a traditional bicycle, but they have some great pedal assisted electric bikes that make it easy to get on the trail. Our machine and design shop is right next to the bike company Giant. They have a great electric bike. I'm sure it's still tough with lumbar issues. Hopefully your body gets better.

I'll tough it out or even quit completely before considering an e-bike. Let's just say I'm not a fan. I hopefully just need some surgery and healing time to get back fully into riding. I raced single speed open and CX until 2 years ago.

My dad is 86 and still rides, just not single track anymore.

So no pics but I got my new bike for up north. I ended up getting a Toughroad SLR GX3. It looks pretty much like this

Mine is the lowest end model. I would have like a slightly higher end version but didn't really want to spend too much more than 1K and the one I got was the only bike at the 4 places I went that was in my size and in my price range that I could test ride and buy within the time period I had. Something things just fall in that way. The groupset is Claris which has actually been fine though with only 8 gears on the rear there were a few times where I wanted one less or one more gear and it wasn't there. It is a lot heavier than I am used to so long climbs was a bit harder. But the fatter tires are great on chip and seal and gravel. It has tubeless tires standard and so far so go. We will see how it manages over the the year since it will sit for extended time periods but if it is a problem I'll just put in tubes. I did take it on a trail that was full of rock and potholes and blackberry brambles and had no flats :thu: either good luck or the tires but I would have never made it on my other bikes. Even still it beat the crap out of me and I doubt the other bikes would have been able to go 30' (I rode 2 miles on that crap before getting back on normal crappy gravel). Brakes are mechanical which are fine by me since I think maintaining those will be more straightforward than hydraulic. Eventually I might swap out the groupset but I'll wait a while and see first. I put 220 miles on it in a couple of weeks with the longest ride being 38 miles (the same ride as the gnarly trail) so I've got some seat time and found it pretty comfortable for the most part and great for the area

saw some justice served today; PPD was confiscating some stolen bikes from a homeless camp. The urban campers are a huge component of bike theft in the city so at least a few people are going to have their rides returned. Cops were checking serials and loading bikes on their prowler

We have the same problem here in Boulder. The tweakers have set up a chop shop under a bridge and the cops aren’t allowed to raid them because Boulder is run by hippies.

I had a Gary Fisher Superfly stolen while on vacation in Pismo beach. It was at a motorhome village camp ground. I kept looking to see if it was still gone. I had four thousand into it. I learned that day.

The only upside is I got a new bike. Triple A insurance paid me a decent price. I upgraded from aluminum to carbon fiber

Someone left a bike chained up overnight to a rack on the side of the street.

This morning when I went past, it was nothing but a frame with a crankset and handlebars chained to the rack.

That's worth more than all 3 of my bikes and my car...combined  I don't think I'd let it out of my sight

I've gone to ER from mountain biking exponentially more than road biking.

Pismo, cool. Yeah they have a lot of bike thieves and drug addicts up there. Grover Beach is where they all live.

A long time local racer and our favorite photographer was hit and left for dead a week ago. They caught and charged the driver later.
He will recover, but not without pain.

Wow, I hope that driver pays. And your friend heals up soon!

I haven't been to the er from mountain biking. I have been hurt a couple of times from dirt biking.
Its the cars I worry about while road riding.

Yeah, I had a guy squeeze by my within one foot today in his car at a high speed. Stretch of Mission Dr in South Pasadena, the right lane is clearly marked up and down the road with the "share the road with cyclists" icon. My area is pretty good for cyclists as everyone on the road is used to them, but there's always some oddball that doesn't know the laws and has it out for us. My taillight has a built in HD camera which is always going, but that's not going to make me feel much better if I'm hit.
