Played my first round of golf today

went to my usual (mostly) course and they were not letting anyone on the course for 2 more hours.....flooded. we got 2" of rain overnight on top of rain on 4 of the last 5 days. so went to plan B, the other course i play, and they were walking only. so grabbed a pull cart and off i went.
there were only 7 cars in the parking lot, so had the course mostly to myself. and it was W E T.
shot a 46 and could have done 3 or 4 better if not for screw ups. :gah:

I played 9 today and did much better than my last few outings.

2 rubbish holes but the rest were ok. Almost got par on a 4 which I've never managed before.

Did a decent job of getting out of trouble when I did hit duffers which is an improvement too.

Lesson4 tomorrow am :thu:

I started playing at 14 because my dad played. It is truly a love hate relationship. As the green fees started to go higher I stuck to playing public courses. Got myself down to about a 13 handicap. When I tore my knee playing B-Ball at 33 that was it, I was done as that is my pivot knee. Tried again about a decade ago because I had an opportunity to play Trump's GC for free through my company. Was fun but my injured my shoulder. After the round I retired from playing ball golf.

However this December of 2020 took up disc golf and it has been a blast. Expense is more on plastic and gas as green fees are for private courses. It is basically the same game except you use discs instead of clubs and a ball. I get more exercise out of it (loss 15 lbs so far), don't need a motorized cart or need to make a tee time. Players are more self managing rather than having a course marshall on your back. Only draw back, picnickers, joggers and runners since it is in a park unless private.
My long time buddy and my ex BIL picked up disc golf a couple years ago and fell in love. They even started their own shop. thediscshop.com (if I'm not supposed to "advertise" please delete)
My buddy is head of IT for Carnival Cruises and has played all over the world. He has played some really killer courses in Sweden and Spain and other cool places.
We have a couple of courses here. I've been meaning to pick up a basic set from his shop and go play. I played years ago with a basic beach frisbee and liked it so I imagine with the right tools it will be even more fun.

Lesson cancelled because of a covid ping in the building.

Hit the range yesterday and got some nice shots off the driver and 3 wood.

Starting to look into getting my own club's Costco had sets that are meant to be excellent for the price. I held off and when I went to pull the trigger earlier in the week they were sold out :/

Had a look on the pro shop at the range. Not that I need to run my spending past Mrs JBJ but I don't think she'd be impressed if I brought home a 400 quid ping driver now matter how nice it felt.

Well that took a quick turn. I had a quick look on FB marketplace and picked up a set of Callaway Big Bertha irons, (older model but practically mint) from a nice old gentleman for £100 cheaper than other sets in worse condition are going for.

No sand wedge so I'll just need to make sure I stay out of the bunkers :embarrassed:

beefore you buy anything else (and i'm a callaway guy too).....

https://www.callawaygolfpreowned.com/

i've got most of what i have from that site for pennies compared to new.
and as for wedges, look for Mack Daddy wedges on that site.
i have 3 of them: 46° PW, 52° Gap and a 60° Lob . best wedges made on the planet.
same goes for drivers and fairway metals.
AND Odyssey putters

Nice!!!

It is really addicting and the health benefits are great.

Some of the courses (from vids) that I have seen of Sweden are incredible. Makes me want to visit real soon. The brands that I use are manufactured in Sweden so watching some of the content for learning and playing the game are centered around some of those videos. What I also dig is that it is cheaper than ball golf and yet almost the same game. As for your buddy's shop, I have not purchased from them as of yet but have visited his website before when I sought out product.

As for getting the right tools, ask your bud is he has some used discs. He could probably recommend certain discs to start with rather than getting a beginner set. Also he may some extras that he could loan you to try until it is time to buy some for yourself.

There's tonnes of odyssey putters on Facebook going cheap, I'd never even heard of them until the other day!

Had lesson 5 on Monday morning then joined so e pals right after for the back 9 and played horribly.

We'd tweaked a few things during the lesson and worked on getting my left arm higher on the backswing then he threw in a couple of things about my alignment and upswing right at the end so my head was full trying to put it into practice.

I did hit probably my best drive yet on the course but the rest was largely terrible.

Hit 100 at the range yesterday and it was equally bad but another 100 today and I'm getting closer to a full decent swing. Getting the club up higher means when I miss hit it, it's BAD but when I get it right it's a thing of beauty and I managed to do that with a bit more consistency today.

18 tomorrow am,my first 4 ball. I'm not even fussed about what they do I just want to get this swing practiced on the course for real.

the one real bad habit i have, and am trying desparately to fix, is picking my head up on the down swing. and it's a concentration thing. every time i take the club back i have to actual tell myself outloud to "stay on the ball". when i do, i hit it ok. when i don't, it's duff city.

Yeah my head movement is bad.

When I manage to keep it still is when I tend to hit the really good shots but I'm counting:

Knees, chin up, straight left arm, 2 knuckles at address, swing low and away, arm up to 11 o clock, set at top of backswing then follow through up and outward, twist torso and bring the chest round and right foot up. Keeping my head in the same place is something I manage to do maybe 1 in 10 shots when I'm concentrating on all of that.

I have a tendency to shift my weight on to my back foot, which causes me to hit behind the ball.

like i have been saying for 40+ years. golf IS the hardest sport to play with any kind of consistency. there are SO many things you can do wrong and trying to keep all of them correct in your head on every single swing is nigh impossible.

all you have to do is watch some tourneys on tv, and watch the best guys IN THE WORLD blow drives into the woods or water, and you get a feel for how hard it is at the local level.

i've often tried to convey this to non-golfers by using this comparison with baseball.
let's see how many home runs a batter can hit when:
he has 14 different bats, of 14 different lengths and weights and he has to use each one in succession. hmmm??

Played my 1st 4 ball today with my neighbour and 2 of his pals from the pub for 9 holes.

They gave me -1 on all of them except the par 5 where they gave me -2. I played pretty good and managed to win 2 holes on my own :) my partner and I pulled it back and won by a hole.

It's a 9 hole course so me and my neighbour grabbed a few beers at the half then went back out at which point I was absolutely shocking

played 18 today. was only going to play 9, but 3 guys came up right behind me on #1 tee and said their 4th wasn't making it, so i joined up with them and made a 4-some. we were all kinda hackers, so no harm.
it started out at 80°(F) and ended up at 92°(F). quite hot and humid. it really was getting to me on the last 2 or 3.

shot an even 100, which kinda sucks, but then again it's not that much above what i generally do.

Got another lesson tomorrow am. I should probably get out of the hot tub and have dialled back the social lubricants but it didn't seem to do Tiger any harm....

Getting my arm up to 11 now which coach Gary will be pleased with. Now he needs to suss how I can hit the ball cleanly with that kind of backswing.

#1 answer to that is.....do not look where the ball is going, until AFTER you've hit it.
(keep looking at and concentrating on hitting the ball first)

5th lesson this morning and it was great. I'm getting my arm up further than I ever thought I would and my numbers were pretty good.

Some drills to work on for my head movement and forward swing for next time. Once O get those locked down I'll be ready for the tour

The video playback comparing even last lesson to now is night and day, he then did a side by side with my first lesson and it looks like a different golfer. A pal who has golfed for 40+ years totally wrote off these lessons "you learn on the course, not with a big computer screen etc..." I'm going to record the playbacks on my phone next time so he can see how big an improvement I've made with just a handful of lessons.
