Olympics stuff. In here.

Usain Bolt has time to smile at the camera in his 100M semi final run. Pretty awesome. Must be cool to hold the claim to 'fastest man alive'. He seems like a pretty funny guy in interviews.

I really enjoy watching him run, and he also seems to be very likable. He puts on a fun show, and has fun doing it. He doesn't seem to take himself too seriously, but takes his business seriously. He seems to be attentive to the other athletes, and respectful of others. Pretty classy it seems to me.

Also, I have no idea how the gymnasts get that high off the ground on the floor routine. Bouncy floor or not. Amazing.

There is an awesome YouTube clip of him stopping in the middle of a tv interview as someone was on the podium getting a medal and their national anthem was playing. This was from a while ago, but it kind of highlights him being a good guy.

EDIT. Here.

Yesterday I watched taped re-broadcasts of the mens soccer match between Colombia & Brazil. Wow, what a match! Bad blood between those two, it almost came to a bench clearing brawl…almost. Colombia was playing dirty and going after Neymar every chance they got. Then after the almost brawl, Colombia started to play much cleaner, but Brazil started to cheat, 'diving' on just about any play where they were handling the ball and a Colombian player came near. The ref threw a bunch of yellow cards at Colombia when they didn't even touch the other player, it was all a fake dive. I hate that shit almost more than the dirty stuff Colombia was doing to begin with :embarrassed:

2nd half was clean, great game over-all.

Watched the women's match between Brazil & 'cowardly' (to use Hope Solo's words) Sweden. Brazil was the much, much better team, but Sweden played to not lose and take it to a shoot-out, which is what happened and they won, again. Boring game, made boring by Sweden's play. But hey, that strategy worked again for them, and now they're playing for gold.

You see, that's been Brazil's biggest problem in football the last few years. They're so naive in thinking their star players individual brilliance is enough to win them tournaments, with mediocre managers that don't really have a plan other than getting the ball to their stars and hope for some world class moment.
The men getting humiliated in both the last World Cup and this year's Copa America says it all.

You can have the best players in the world, but it's a team game and to win the big titles you need a proper team mentality and players that execute good tactics (which is what Sweden's ladies did very well yesterday). On the men's side you only have to look at this year's Euro tournament - Wales and Iceland in particular, who really overachieved.
This is how Atletico Madrid has won the Spanish League, as well as made it to two consecutive Champions Leauge finals.

Of course, you need really good players, but that's the icing rather than the basis.

I was a competitive gymnast for 6 years and a coach for many more afterwards. The stuff the Olympic level gymnasts do now amazes me on every event. High bar looks like what a gymnast of the 80's or 90's would do on a video game if real world physics weren't involved.

The floor is springy but it's not like a trampoline. It's actually designed to help keep the gymnast safe on landing as much as it is a boost before the stunt.

When Simone Biles does her layout double back, the second flip goes HIGHER than the first one. Unreal.

Handball ladies delivering, and then some...Swedes just utterly humiliated in that game. Excellent.
That was an awesome match, Norway dominated so much than even when they started making mistakes, they still maintained a 10+ goal lead throughout the match.

Not sure if I wanna sit up all night and watch the next one, tho...

That goalkeeping in the first half was just ridiculous. :embarrassed:

Yeah, it's a bit late...not planning on it, but we'll see.

Cool. Didn't know you did that. I cannot figure out physically how Simone and co. do as you say, get up there, and keep getting up. My quarter inch jump over reach persona just can't comprehend it. Also, having jumped on skis using speed and ramps, I still do not get how that happens. It seems to defy gravity.

On a side note, a fraternity brother I have not seen or spoken to for years is the current president of USA Gymnastics. He is a great guy (or was when I knew him) but have no idea how he got in that position. Pretty cool though! Great year for him.

I really like how he is attentive to the other athletes' performances, and seems to be just a good sport. Also, his showmanship is fun and joyful rather than coming off as arrogant. I like that a lot.

That was the appeal to me when I was younger. When I would lift off out of a handspring and start flipping or twisting, time would slow down, gravity would let go just long enough to feel like flight. Mentally I can still feel all the little twitches and turns to do a full twist ora double somersault, but the combination of old worn out knees and an extra 70 pounds of mass keeps me tethered to the ground.

The next time you feel your stomach go light on a roller coaster, imagine getting that rush from just your hands and bare feet. That rush was worth the 6 day a week workouts.

Has anyone been watching the USA basketball team? Since they let NBA players in, it's a snooze-fest watching them steamroll opponents. It gets no prime time coverage whatsoever. Sad really, it used to be a marquis event. Anyone else remember watching in '72 when they kept adding time to the clock until the Russians won? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

I have felt that regularly skiing, or mountain biking (but not all the inverted tricks and such). But to be able to do that with just your hands and feet and not a gravity assisted glide or roll is truly amazing!

Steamroll?!? They've won their last three games by 7,4 and 3 points respectively. This year's team is easily the weakest since 2004. I'm scared to death that Argentina will beat them today.

The USA team lost the gold medal game in 2008, no? Or 2004? It's becoming an international sport.

Yes and no. Just grouping a bunch of great players together and expecting great things doesn't necessarily work out. The need to be able to coalesce as a team. If they let the current NBA champs go straight to the olympics they would dominate everyone.

Late lost a gold medal game in 1972. In 2004 they did not make the gold medal game finishing 3rd (also finished 3rd in 1988 ). Their record is 130-5 overall and have not lost since 2004 to Argentina. The rest of the world is catching up but it will be sometime before it is competitive for the goal. Right now everyone else is playing for bronze or silver depending on what side of the bracket you are on. ROW woman's basketball is even further behind the US
