My thoughts after visiting HCGJ today for the first time since the change...

Was the exodus really that massive? Initially, I didn't go back simply because I couldn't log in, and I couldn't remember what e-mail address I used when I signed up 7 years ago....

I think the site as a whole took a hit went they went to the Jive format and back, and then as they started having the same old server problems and then eventually changed to this format that really killed a lot of traffic off. It is super slow compared to even six months ago, which was way down from a few years ago already.

Was pretty much just Gennation having his occasionally scheduled meltdown, which always resulted in him getting banned.

I missed that timeframe, but I'm not surprised he melted. He's a really talented guy, but I'm pretty sure he's also a really sick guy. He's also pretty abrasive, which limits the amount of sympathy that people would ordinarily have for him being sick. It's kind of a shame.

Howdy!

I'd say, just eyeballing it, that GJ is maybe 1/3 to 1/4 as active as this forum is right now.

I have less than 30 posts there since I join there in 2010. It will probably remain like that for a while so grab a snickers bar if you are going to see anymore posts from me over there.

Heck, I don't remember what the site looked like before and I haven't gone there yet either....

He's gotten gradually worse the last couple of years. Everything's fine for a while and then he goes on a drinking binge and gets pissed off. Again and again.
Too bad, as he's quite useful when it comes to music stuff.

And from what I've seen of his posting on TGP he's pretty "normal" there. He's even been friendly to me.

I miss some of the people on GJ, but I don't miss GJ. Too much trolling, from the wads who ruined perfectly fine threads to those whose entire reason for being was to start threads about menu options at Olive Garden.

Sounds like classic self-medicating.

What was your S/N at GJ?

Actually, I mostly stayed away from HCGJ, HCOJ, and spent almost all my time on HCEG, but the change there is of a similar magnitude. I'm just curious: Are folks on HC touting the new format as the greatest thing since sliced bread and excoriating those of us who've fled?

There was some of that early on but there arent enough left to gin up much of anything now.
I continue to read HCEG (but once a day will keep you up to date now.) Whereas an ignored post ended up on page three within an hour a few years ago, I now see posts from two days ago on page one.
HCEG was never the place to find the most experts but it had a nice collection of personalities. Those are mostly all gone now.

It's a real shame, too. It's almost like my hometown got visited by a plague or something. I'm just glad some of "the gang" from HCEG (e.g. you, PK, BK, etc.) are here.

I like drinking as much as the next guy (well maybe not as much as Peeker, but that's another thread ), but it doesn't make me go angry at everyone and/or post pics of my dick on the forum where I hang out.

Yes, but you don't have the problems of being a better guitar player than everyone, being able to predict the future, and playing in a genre-defining, travelling burlesque show.

Were you there when there was just "guitars", before the EG/GJ split? Every time they subdivided the forums it lost quite a bit of the forum essence.

The new bulletin board software actually seems to be better and more stable than the old stuff they were using. But it took a long time for them to get the kinks out and it to look right. I think for a lot of people, it was just the last straw after a long line of missteps.

My guess is that he was Bipolar...it's not uncommon for someone on the Manic end of things to have a break into psychosis. Not a knife-wielding, kill everyone psychosis like in the movies, which rarely happens with anyone Bipolar, but a break from reality, nonetheless.

Those folks lose touch with reality, and can come back pretty quickly if they're under a doctor's care, and get the right medication. Those who have never been properly diagnosed, or aren't under a doctor's care? They end up binge drinking or using street drugs (or illegally obtained prescription drugs), and still end up having a psychotic episode.

My guess is that Genn probably fell into that category. Whether he truly does or not, someone in that condition really isn't truly responsible for their behavior: it's the illness doing the talking at that point, not the person.

Functionally it works but the features were designed for a tech or customer support type-forum, and not a more social forum like these places tend to be. The current vBulletin software works fine (we're on it right now as are a ton of other much larger sites) but I don't think the folks who make the decisions regarding the maintaining of the forums actually use the forums and how the last few years have played out has really damaged HC's relationship with their community.
