I've only ever hear the term 'piña' also, but my Spanish dictionary app also has 'ananas.' Best guess is that is the Spain-Spanish word...

Ananas is the latin, and many languages use latin roots. The link above says pineapple or a variant is as common or more common than the latin, but it makes a good facebook meme. Or not.

How is it descriptive? It's not an apple and it doesn't grow on a pine tree. Calling it a sand cheese or an ice potato would have been equally off base.
