We should really create some kind of education program to spread our understanding of the term pineapple to the uneducated masses.

I think that the latin/world name has something to do with the fact that the picture item is precisely what you DON'T want in ananas (or more specifically uranas)....
 
How is it descriptive? It's not an apple and it doesn't grow on a pine tree. Calling it a sand cheese or an ice potato would have been equally off base.

*sigh*

Because it looks like a freakin pine cone.

And "apple" in this context means "something fruity that grows on a tree or bush," like a crab apple or a horse apple.

Let's move on now.
