I've only ever hear the term 'piña' also, but my Spanish dictionary app also has 'ananas.' Best guess is that is the Spain-Spanish word...

How is it descriptive? It's not an apple and it doesn't grow on a pine tree. Calling it a sand cheese or an ice potato would have been equally off base.
