Question: It's been a while, we have a few new Teles floating around; is the Tele the lie detector of guitars?

Wasn’t it splawn darts? And it was polygraph I believe.

It was Bernardo Gui. Every 6 weeks or so he'd post a thread with the same title 'THE MIGHTY TELECASTER! THE POLYGRAPH OF ELECTRIC GUITARS!'

Darial/SplawnDarts on the other hand was NOT a tele fan. I'm paraphrasing, but he claimed it was a primitive prototype guitar that should be consigned to the dustbin of history, and replaced with Jackson Soloists, because they could do everything better. He also claimed a Floyd Rose could replicate a b-bender, so that's how knowledgable he was.

Oh, and he thought any amp with EL86s was a useless piece of shit.

Opinions wrt guitar should be stated loudly, obnoxiously, and defended the same way. It’s all part of the schtick…

I've never heard of one. Thought you meant el84 but, I googled found some people making DIY amps with el86s. Are there any mainstream amps I would recognize the name of, that uses them?

Oops, I mistyped. I meant to type EL84, I didn't actually know there was such a tube as an EL86, but now you've got me really curious about it. I have learned something new!

I had never heard of an EL86 tube either. Only the EF86. Interesting.

Early AC15s and AC30s had an EF86 preamp tube in the Normal channel. Supposedly it makes the amp sound very mid-focused and thicker and beefier than with the later very chimey Top Boost channel, I guess much like a Plexi without all the bass.

According to the interwebz, EF86-equipped amps take dirt pedals of all sorts very, very well. In the early '60s the tube was deemed hopelessly unreliable and Jennings made a new preamp circuit with only 12ax7s, but original, restored non-Top Boost AC30s are by some considered the holy grail of AC30s. There are not that many around, and they're often in pretty bad shape.

I wonder if there's a video out there with someone playing a Tele through a non-TB AC30? Hmm..
