I know you hate it but THIS IS THE WEIN NFL THREAD...'25-'26

Well the Bears let that one slip thru their fingers. This is what happens when you let team hang around
Typical Bears football. Defense looks good. Offense is just promising enough to give you hope re: potential. Defense gets tired/worn down. Penalties thwart the offense. Bears snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Repeat.

This coaching staff seems competent. Players seemed at least prepared for football unlike last season. But they’re a ways away from legit contention.

Ex-bears quarterback turned coach Jim Harbaugh, thought his national championship winning quarterback and Illinois native JJ McCarthy, was the best quarterback in the draft in which the Bears chose Caleb Williams with the #1 pick.

McCarthy looked pretty ordinary. Kid made some good throws and didn’t let things get to him too much. But he looked like a talented but flawed rookie QB managing a game and being asked to do just enough. Crazy Jim was probably doing this kid a solid in the media more than anything.

Maye was the most quarterbacky looking quarterback in that draft. Daniels was also up there and has been the best in that class so far. People shit on Williams for dumb stuff like crying and painting his nails—which who cares? He made some nice plays yesterday, but not enough. The general read on him in the national media and the more skeptical local folks is that he’s a bit of an entitled diva and maybe not particularly smart/disciplined/resilient. Which is fine if you play like Aaron Rodgers (until it isn’t, just ask Green Bay). It’s less fine if your ceiling is Rex Grossman.

I think the bigger issues with Williams is he’s small (for an NFL QB) and his collegiate success was wrapped up with an offensive system that doesn’t exactly translate to pro ball. He also seems to get rattled if things go wrong (like that three and out to start the 2nd half) and you can kind of see the pressure mounting in real time and he starts playing tight and almost gives himself the yips.

I hope this season doesn’t cause Ben Johnson to snap and jump off the Sears Tower.

"I think the bigger issues with Williams is he’s small (for an NFL QB) and a full size running back might be a good thing"

FIFY

Bears were a lot better than they have been but, obviously are not there yet. I was a little too hopeful after I watched the Lions/Packers game. Lions lost to a team that was 1-5 in the division last year... that must mean Lions are nothing without Ben Johnson... Bears have Ben Johnson now so, our nothing is something now.

What the Bears need in their RB room is a guy like that guy Montgomery up in Detroit, I tell you what.

Oh…

Well, my Bengals got off to an ugly start, which is no surprise - the surprise was Cleveland's kicker handing us the game. Zac Taylor needs to learn to play to win, but he plays to not lose. It's a problem.

I went to bed in the 3rd quarter of Baltimore-Buffalo. That was a mistake, but watched the end yesterday. What a game!

Bears-Vikings was fun to watch, as I was rooting for Minnesota :).

MNF Vikings vs Bears was a good game. Glad I watched. Sorry, about the outcome for you Chicagoans.

On Sunday, I was happy that my Broncos defeated the Titans. Denver defense looked good, but the offense needs work.

He was shaky in his NFL debut. They got the win though. Jim may or may not have been doing JJ a solid. The kid was 27-1 in his college career with a National Championship. 1-0 in the NFL. He doesn't mess up if he's in a good situation. Minnesota seems to be a good situation.

Time will tell how these two 2024 drafted quarterbacks turn out in the pros.

Last year we prioritized Sunday hikes in the Forest Preserves over Bears football. I think that will be happening this year too.
Yeah. I used to watch religiously, but after the Matt Nagy meltdown I just kinda put it on if I’m doing something else. I don’t have time to be angry at this dumb team if George and Ryan and Kevin are all cool with this bullshit.

I think Ben Johnson is a good coach and there seem to be some solid dudes on this team. I hope they do well, but this fucking franchise…

I watched the first three innings of the Cubs game and totally regretted switching to the Bears. They can’t run the ball, they can’t manage the clock, they already lead the league in penalties and the entire team can’t play a consistent 4 quarters.

Their MVP will be their Aussie punter who can kick a football 3/4s of a mile into an empty deep dish pizza box.

Swift had one or two runs where he showed some grit, but they don’t have a power guy. And the OL isn’t good enough to overcome false starts by executing on the next play to regain yardage. There was some bad officiating last night, but the Bears still played sloppy, undisciplined ball such that the refs weren’t the sole factor in their implosion.

I wish Williams could see easy shots and hit the open guy vs. doing something amazing and then passing into the turf the next three plays.

I’d be willing to grant the coaches this one game as their “new guy makes mistakes with clock management and challenges” learning curve. But bro needs to get that sorted.

Also, in today’s league you gotta be automatic at 50 yards out on a FG. It’s hard. You’ve gotta be a freak to do it. But every reasonably competitive team is routinely making those kicks.

Jeeeezzz

Dallas and Giants...41 points scored in the 4th. Dallas wins in OT with zero seconds left. I don't know how many times the lead was exchanged...a lot!

What a game!

I've had a rough night and I hate the fucking Eagles, man.

They had obvious false starts 2-3 times they did the Tush Push. Including an obvious one on the goal line that lead to a TD. Others extended their drives. The last time they did it (did I mention they did it like 57 times?) looked like a fumble but no one knows because the play is designed to block referees from seeing anything.

Unlike the Super Bowl, I think the Chiefs outplayed them mostly. Or at least it was a pretty even handed game, where neither offense could really do much at all. But Eagles were the worse offense somehow. And they have a lower ceiling this season because they aren't missing their top WRs.

It really came down to Kelce bobbling up an interception on the goal line which was returned for good field position. Andy makign a bone headed move to go for a 4th and 4 deep into Chiefs territory early in the game.

Lots of FIBs on this thread. I anticipate that will subside as the season rolls along.

Field goal fest tonight. I'm looking forward to the Chargers Raiders game tomorrow. I'm not sure who I want. I find myself rooting for Geno Smith to succeed.

My Broncos vs Colts was 28 to 26 near the end of the 4th quarter, Denver still leading after lots of mistakes and penalties, including a Bo Nix pass for an interception.

The Colts had the ball at the end, ran the clock down and attempted a 60 yard field goal. They missed! I jumped up and cheered! Then, the referee said the Broncos had committed a leverage penalty. They moved the ball 15 yards closer and the Colts made the 2nd field goal attempt from 45 yards to win the game, Colts 29 vs Broncos 28.

I watched the so-called leverage penalty play, but I still don’t understand the call. Ultimately, the Broncos defeated themselves with multiple mistakes toward the end of the 4th.
