Going to make some meteoras!

Getting underway! I cut the perimeter shape and the main control cavity. I’ll put the toggle switch on the upper bout Les Paul style and my 4 volume and tone knobs behind the bridge. The neck pickup and toggle switch will both be suspended from the pickguard. The bridge pickup will go in with a chrome mounting ring.

Well that was the 4th tele I’ve owned or made for myself and the 4th one that made me say meh. My brother, however, flipped over it so happy birthday.

I’m doing a little experiment here next. I have a homely yet very light slab of poplar and I’m gonna see how it does.

My own opinions about wood’s influence in electric guitars is probably not shared by many. But in my never ending quest for enlightenment, I’m always poking. So here we go. Unfortunately by scroll saw broke part way through cutting the slab so I’m in a bit of a delay waiting for a part to arrive to repair the saw.

Does your experiment involve maple on top of the poplar or, just poplar? Reason I'm asking is, poplar has me thinking about the First Act Sheenas.

Just poplar. However, I got my hands on a ridiculously lightweight piece of mahogany so the poplar is going to have to wait. View attachment 90335View attachment 90336
I just got some Mahogany recently that is the lightest I've ever held. I even asked the sawyer to double check it. What the heck makes that happen? The grain structure looks normal and just as dense as ever. I just wish my piece was guitar sized.

Lots of factors. Growth rate of the tree, amount of minerals present in the wood, height of the log from the ground when cut.
The density of wood can vary greatly just from the bottom to the top, with the bottom being heavier. A warm climate with fast growth contributes to lighter wood. Even how much wind the tree has to stand against every day will impact it.
