Compendium of 2020 new releases

The Fiona record bothers me because I just don't hear melodies I like. Also, the reviews alllllllllll seemed to be navel-gazing jobs by writing program grads about 'gender stuff.' A worthy topic that IMO will never, ever, ever be addressed in a compelling fashion by said writers.

Sometimes artists aren't responsible for their hype machines, but in this case I sensed an enthusiastic enjoining by said artist. I'd be deeply pleased if all of the politics had arrived via something listenable. So I was disappointed by the music.

But the hype really irritated me. Perhaps I'm just having a male menopause moment, but lately I feel that I've been inundated by articles limned by self-centered post-adolescents who find their first contacts with universal human experiences - Death! Responsibility! Relationships Are Hard! - prompt deep wonder. And think that "the rest of us" would rilly, rilly benefit from reading their profound observations.

So, I have unfairly lumped that album (which has some moments that are at the very least musically interesting and ambitious) in with some other cultural baggage.

Bill Frisell is good at guitar ... who knew?

The new Taylor Swift record is really good. I thought Lover had some great songs but it was overlong and some of the bigger, glitzier capital Ess would-be singles were not super awesome (Me, The Man).

This thing sounds great. It takes what the National does and makes it not boring. And Swift seems to have leveled up as a writer and incorporating some new tricks. It’s not unlike the Phoebe Bridgers record. They should do a collab record together.

I posted it in the What are you listening to now thread earlier.

It's definitely a more mature sounding album. And not just because people are freaking out she uses 'cuss words' now.

Yeah. Her writing and melodic voice is tighter and more organic-seeming. More assured, crafty without being showoffy. There’s some of the stuff on Lover that is similarly good. I love 1989 and think it’s a strong record front to back, but it’s definitely an imperial phase “watch my power moves” thing.

I certainly felt that “Archer” was a standout on the last record, and all of this new record seems like it shares that song’s general approach.
