Barn Storm 2017: Friday, the 13th of Rocktober

Just an aside: if you are investigating Beck, you might try "One Foot In The Grave," a stripped-down, mostly-acoustic, bluesy record he recorded up in Olympia just as "Loser" was breaking on radio. It's part Alan Lomax recording, part odd hotel room goodbye note, and a compelling record. Also entirely different from everything else he's done.

It's my favorite Beck record.

Both "Asshole" and "He's A Mighty Good Leader" are classics. Tom Petty's cover of the former is priceless.

I'm a bit surprised it's known, my friends at K Records weren't exactly able to place end caps in Target ... glad you enjoyed it, too. FWIW, at some point you may wish to do a small investigation of Love As Laughter, some of those guys played on that record and they do a (much) louder (but still bluesy, think Stones '73) take on NW Indie Rock. Recommended songs are "On The Run," "Druggachusetts," "Slow Blues Forever," "Stakes Avenue," and "Temptation Island." (much as it pains me to say, the last two releases, which 'feature' on Spotify, aren't worth your while, you have to go before 2001).

I worked in record stores in the late 90s. One day, I was reading the liner notes to Petty's "She's the One" while it was playing on the store PA, and it said "Asshole" was written by Beck. I went over to the Beck section, looked at the albums, and there it was. So I played it in the store. Subsequently, I never listened to Jon Spencer's Blues Explosion ever again.

Starting to get stuff together for the weekend. I'm going to have so much delay, reverb and modulation, I am worried we may be transported to an alternate universe.

Did I bring cymbals last time? I can't remember if we needed them or not.
