2025 Concert Thread

Went to see Marshall Tucker band. It was at a new concert venue out in the county for once. Parking was free and then it only took five minutes to get in. They didn’t have an opening act or much of a stage show. I guess they let the music talk. They played everything I expected. No surprises.

The best part of this new concert venue is that it is only 10 minutes from my house. After the show I was out of the parking lot in two minutes.

Chappel Roan last night. A lot more sequins and fishnets and a lot less lager than Oasis :embarrassed:

I was actually quite disappointed, I went in with an open mind. Stellar all female session band and the hits sounded great. Was fun to see kids going crazy for the music but she's not got the catalogue to warrant a 90 minute headline slot to what was a huge crowd.

Bit like Olivia Rodrigo's Glastonbury set I mean it was OK, really good in some parts but missing something.

Also did the Uber slick American popstar overly rehearsed *banter* between songs which annoys me no end.

So the Gov't Mule show was at a winery in Michigan. Nice location. I had opted for a VIP package so we were right upfront. Which was awesome, BUT.... Lord, I am lucky if I do not end up with permanent hearing loss after that... Will not be doing that again, at least not without hearing protection....

Love Warren, saw back in the day with the Allmans, the Last Waltz tour in 2019, Dark Side of the Mule in 2023, and sitting in with DMB twice. He is disproportionally talented. Being able to play, write, and sing as well as he can just isn't far.

To the volume issue, Mule are a LOUD band.

I just got back from seeing Samantha Fish for the third time. She’s a force of nature on stage. It’s impressive to see someone work a pedal board in 6" box heels. No digital floorboard for her; she was just hunching down and turning knobs between songs.

This was the first time in ages I’ve been front row center for a show. It was awesome being able to hear the roar of her amp up close—those little Fender amps are so fucking loud! I haven’t enjoyed that Fender sound up close since I saw Dick Dale play on a boat.

Saw the finest thing to come out of Glasgow since @jbj yesterday :embarrassed:

Mogwai was absolutely amazing. It was one of the few bands that I listened to a lot when I was younger (and still one of my most played nowadays) that I hadn't seen yet. So good, absolutely not disappointed, especially since it's the kind of music that can just not work live when not done right.

Never got into mogwai, was a bit too heavy for me. Just had a look at their Wikipedia, didn't realise De Rosa were on Chemical Underground, we giggled with them a fair few times back in the day. Probably worth anything but there's an early release of their debut ep sitting in a box somewhere here or at my brother's.

In an effort to try turn everything positive that I can control. I posted earlier that I missed all but a few songs from Blue Oyster Cult. They opened for a Pink Floyd cover band.
My buddy showed up late and it took 45 minutes in line to get in the venue. FUUUUUdge!

Found out they are playing in Indianapolis, IN in a few weeks (as headliners this time). I have been planning a trip to Sweetwater in Fort Wayne, IN to load up on a dream guitar or two. Indy is about a 4 hour drive for me. Fort Wayne is north of Indy.

Bought a front row ticket, got two hotels booked on my wifes points, and had my car serviced. Now that I'm retired these are sort of trips I'll be making in the fall season when my wife travels a bit more for work.

Im going to look at some ES-335s and possibly a gold top Les Paul with p90s. I need a better midi keyboard as well. Glad I saved on the hotels. lol

We saw AJ Croce last fall and again in the spring. If you get a chance to see him, don't pass it up. His shows are fantastic, and he's one of the most energetic and engaging performers on the stage today.

Saw Shemekia Copeland Saturday before last at a local festival. She never disappoints.

Saw Jimmie Vaughn last Sunday night at a local venue. He's in his mid 70s and it shows. His singing is good as ever (not a high bar for Vaughn). His playing seemed a bit labored. It was still a very enjoyable show.

Went to Philly to see Pulp at the Met on Tuesday. Outstanding show. Jarvis Cocker turns 62 this month and I was not prepared for the length of the show or the energy he put out. 2 hours and 15 minutes with a very short break between the main set and the encore (encore was a generous five songs).

Saw Atlanta Rhythm Section Wednesday night at the Musical Instrument Museum here in Phoenix.
They sounded great and appeared to be having a great time.
Got to meet them after the show and talked for a bit. Fun evening.

Saw Chicago last Wed. at the Rady Shell. Only two original guys left in the band--trumpet and trombone player. They were tight as hell, harmonies were on point, and the guy singing the Cetera parts was incredible. No auto tune, no discernible backing tracks (except for maybe one Motown cover). Fun show!

Hozier at Jiffy Lube Live last night.

Awesome show. Eleven musicians including Hozier on stage. His voice is just stellar. The songs are so good and his guitars and the tones were top notch. Bigsby loaded ES-330, Gratsch bari (also w/ Bigsby), modern black strat w/ roasted maple neck & board, red vintage spec strat with RW board, a red National solidbody, black Dano resonator, and we thought two Takamine acoustics.

Awkward looking picking and playing technique, but the riffs and arrangements sound so good.

While this is generally not something I care about, the lighting and screen rigs were really cool too. Definitely designed for maximum effect from a more centered view, so being on the outside edge of section 101 lessened the effect a bit.

For the encore he was escorted by his security team to the mixing board where he played a couple of tune solo to the 200s and lawn. It was very cool. He had a lot to say about things that had me worried about how unwelcomed he might be if certain folks here about his criticisms of issues in the U.S.. He did temper them in pointing out these issues aren't exclusive to the U.S., but I don't think certain folks in leadership in this country would hesitate to make an example of him.

But I, like it seemed the rest of crowd were 100% supportive of and on board with everything he said. The focus of the fans on his performance is something missing from the many DMB shows I've seen. No casual conversations, drunken screaming during mellow tunes, etc. Just everyone being zoned in on the music...with of course a clear ton of folks zoned in on him (not they don't love the music, but they clearly also love the delivery system).

I recommend you go see him if you get the chance. I will definitely go see him again. I'd even consider going back tonight if it weren't for the weather and the location. We were stuck in JLL's shittily managed lots for an hour or more before we could get out. Got home at 1:15am...I frigging exhausted.

Ethel Cain at the Salt Shed in Chicago on Saturday. Incredible show. She's my current favorite artist. The crowd skewed young, but there were quite a few older people too. A lot of them were introduced to her music by their kids. This is the last tour under the Ethel Cain stage name. The character was cannibalized on 2022s Preacher's Daughter LP. This album is the prequel to that. I don't know if she will use her real name, Hayden Anhedönia, or if she will adopt another stage name. Doesn't matter. I will see her on her next tour if I can.

I drove several hundred miles to see Blue Oyster Cult south of Indianapolis, Indiana. This was the band that I missed due to a late friend in a long line in St. Louis. I planned to go to Fort Wayne Indiana to buy some guitars, so I combined the concert with the trip to Sweetwater. Front Row!

Caught a national touring Led Zeppelin tribute called Get the Led Out last night. They faithfully recreate the studio cuts, so they have two guitarists and a multi-instrumentalist who covers keys, backing vocals, guitar, and even drums at one point. They really sounded amazing.
