2024 Concert Thread

Steve Hackett show was last night. It was really excellent! He did a set of his solo stuff, and then a Genesis set - they played all of Foxtrot and then a couple more. He is 70-something but has not lost a step, still has blazing chops. And his band is cracking. And they have a singer that covers Gabriel's parts very capably. Mrs. Roach enjoyed it too!

Tomorrow night, 4/20
STOKED!!!
Got a hotel room within walking distance of the show so we can just chill once we get there.

Saw Conan last night. Crushing.

Couple thoughts on the show:

Great sound quality at the venue. One of the best I've been to lately in that respect.

The guys threw down a great set, did absolutely everything diy, & hung out with folks on the venue patio. I think the longest break they took between songs was maybe a minute to tune up and grab a swig of water. Full send from start to finish.

Fwiw, about his band, the drummer Craig Blundell has been playing with Steven Wilson as well as his own band Frost for a few years now, and bass player Jonas Reingold was in The Flower Kings since about 1999 (he is probably one of the best bass players I've ever heard live, nevermind in the studio with TFK) and singer Nad Sylvan has done quite a few really decent solo albums as well as the Agents of Mercy stuff together with Roine Stolt. Coincidently, Roine did one tour with Hackett as the bass player before Jonas Reingold took over. These are all seasoned pros.

And Hackett himself is obviously incredible.

The Flaming Lips was one of the best shows I've ever been to. The Florida Theater, as always, is my perfect venue size.
Wayne will not skimp one little bit on the show. He has to do EVERY SINGLE THING he has planned without question. It's amazing and hilarious and definitely not your normal concert. The time in between songs for tear down and set up was very minimal but consisted of Wayne pumping the crowd up while the techs set up inflatables or got him into costume. It was almost like watching them rehearse but the performances were dialed in.
3 solid hours of music. They did all of Yoshimi and then proceeded to play for almost 2 more hours.
The amount of confetti used in that show is ridiculous. The 2 cannons went off just about every song and they blew confetti for a solid 30 seconds to a minute every time.
They closed with Race for the Prize (perfect choice IMO) and it felt like the best party I've ever been to was ending and it made me sad but I was so happy from the show it was hard to be sad.
I also took my son to the Milk Bar but it's all boarded up. Saw lots of great shows there over the years.

My 2024 cup runneth over. I'll be eating ramen for the rest of my life but whatever.

We saw Joe Jackson in Santa Fe last night. It turns out the version of "Is She Really Going Out with Him" that I didn't know I needed is the one where Joe summons his inner Peaky Blinders persona and the song is performed with a tuba.

He threw in a beautiful cover of "Waterloo Sunset" too.
