I call BS on the Grand Prix racing. 51 drivers have been killed in the history of Formula One, with a total of 933 races. Also, only 13 of those deaths were in the last forty years. That's not 1 in 100.

they also left out the "going over niagra falls in a barrel" sport.
i can't imagine the odds of surviving that are very high.

As someone who has over 120 jumps and loves it but is a poor swimmer, that surprises me not at all and it kinda validates my instincts.
Skydiving is as safe as you make it. I moved on after 164 jumps and had two reserve rides.
My sister had over 96 hours of freefall logged when she retired. She had only one bad landing/injury.

Why would you jump out of a perfectly good airplane???

I had over 300 dives without a single incident either..course like sky diving one really bad dive is likely the last one you will have. I suspect the stats are higher for diving because more people are likely to do it over sky diving.

It's not total deaths out of total participants.

1 person out of every ~101K who skydive will die because from it. 1 person out of every ~34K who scuba dive will die from it. It's almost 3 times as dangerous to scuba dive as to skydive.

Jeez, 2 out of 164 jumps is pretty bad. Thank God for those reserves!

I only had one semi-bad landing; the ground wind picked up to almost 30 knots after we had exited the aircraft, so a number of us weren't able to do proper PLFs. I was dragged a bit, twisting an ankle.

Since your chance of dying doubles every 8 years, it seems obvious that the moral of this thread is that to insure a long life, stop getting older. o_O

I think a big reason for the scuba number is because of cave divers. You occasionally hear of a recreational diver dying, but almost every diving death I've heard about was a cave diver.
