UK wise - Ray Davies without a doubt. I'll get slaughtered for this but I'd genuinely put him in front of Lennon for best British pop songwriter.

It's quite interesting to see the response to Keith Flint's passing given how The Prodigy were regarded by the media and most folk when they first came onto the scene.

Davies is certainly better than Lennon as a pure songwriter over the course of their careers—but Lennon burned white hot for a good while. Lennon gets a lot of credit as a lyricist, but Davies and even Mick Jagger started eating his lunch after about ‘67/‘68.

But Davies hardly seems unheralded. I assumed that the OP was talking about Scott Walker type cult musicians.

I think there is a wide swath of songwriters and artists who (justifiably) revere Prine as a god, but the general public might struggle to place him.
