Will Guitar Center actually fold?

They won't go under. They may however declare bankruptcy and that would fuck the major manufacturers out of millions, possibly causing a chain reaction.

Oh well.

...At which point the Asian-made guitars will rise once again like the mid-80's. Pointy headstocks, Floyd's, and all!

I can't wait to see their "greatest clearance sale EVER" adverts every day for a decade, as I would love to save 30% on Rogue strings.

That's not exactly how it works. The most like to not get paid would be the investors, and large creditors. Bankruptcy isn't a bad thing in and of itself. It allows you to get rid of bad contracts, unions, business arrangements that no longer make sense.

With out chapter 7 there would be no airlines.

Chapter 7 is court administered liquidation - very few carriers have done that. Chapter 11 is protection from creditors during a re-organization - which may also allow you to get rid of bad contracts, etc. and most carriers have done that.

I screwed up my numbers. You are correct.

Oh yeah? Well which chapter is it when you're in super secret double bankruptcy and one more infraction can get your frat house razed by Dean Wormer?

I met Ken and sold his guitars for a short while when he was getting started. It was amazing how fast he went from "NEVER WILL MY INSTRUMENTS BE IN GC" to a GC employee with his designs rebranded as a GC house brand once they showed him the money.

The Laguna stuff, right? The few I've tried haven't been bad instruments. I love my old Brawley bass.

Yeah. Pretty much the same thing with a different logo. I had one of his guitars for a while but I traded it to a student for an acoustic.

My new President at my Company is a personal friend of Richard Branson. He said that about 10 years ago, right when the .com bubble was bursting, they were in real bad shape already. If you remember, that's when e-Commerce was really taking hold, and Virgin America Stores were kind of a Niche' type of thing, in the US like FYM, Sam Goody, etc. They were all fading her, but Virgin was HUGE in Japan, Asia-Pac, and Europe.

Well, supposedly Branson went to them (the GC / MF people) and offered them an ass-ton of cash, for the brand, and was going to market music, merch and instruments in giant Sams Club style Music "haven's" . . Think, the Wal-Mart of cultural arts. Now it doesn't seem like a winning idea in the US, but internationally, Mega Stores and especially Cultural Media type stuff is HUGE in 2nd and 3rd world. (Dubai, all that was just coming into it's own)

Well, in any case, there was all this FTC preamble stuff, and they were really close to doing it. It just never materialized. If I had to guess, they probably were going to over value GC, to make it make sense to the Virgin shareholders, and the idea seemed like nonsense at the time.

Looking at them now, can you imagine ? There are a couple of them that have those "GC Music Academy" which is a 3rd party itself, with contracted instructors with non-compete clauses and all that.

No wonder they can't make it work. Fender and Gibson have no incentive to market to small chains because their products sell themselves.

If I recall correctly, a few years ago Gibson discontinued dealerships for many small vendors. If GC were to fold, I wonder if they would come, tail between their legs, asking those dealers to come back. :embarrassed:

yea.....i personally know three different music store owners that dropped gibson because gibson REQUIRED them to buy $100,000 worth of gear per year. and on top of that , gibson insisted that they carry ALL their products. if GC goes under....gibson would HAVE to change their greedy policies. or they'd sell nothing.
i hope GC finds a way to keep going, cuz there are NO other music stores around here anymore (other than trinket shops).

btw....all three of my friends that were owners are all out of business now.

Durdels carries everything for guitars and basses. I hate the Guitar Center here, I rather pay a couple of bucks more some where else.

durdel's charges full retail. i've gotten bit by them. never go in there again.

To each his own I guess. They have always treated me well.

yea...well Cliff sold me a PRS Custom 22 and it cost me $1400.....which would be a great price....except for it was NINETEEN EIGHTY EIGHT. i found out a few weeks later that that was about $300 too much.
