Who hurt you?

Good ol' Larkin. Such a cheery bloke!

It certainly speaks to my desire to remains childless. Katie is excited about the thought of being a mum and boy can I see that going horribly awry...

My ex-wife, but only for a brief period. I made a decision that I wasn't going to let her treatment of me and the pain that it inflicted control the situation.
I decided to move on quickly as I had too much to offer in this world and it had too much to offer me.
I don't even acknowledge that portion of my life any more and it's been a long time ago. And to be honest, its the best thing that ever happened to me.

Life is pain
Suffering is optional
Interesting thought to start the day. I have not had a full cup of joe yet so just a germ of a thought at this point. But in cycling, running and other endurance sports I have done, it is a badge of courage if you "know how to suffer". As a former MTB racer Doug, I am sure you know that saying. I have always understood that to mean the recognize pain and accept it, but don't get blown out by it. As I write this, I am thinking about is that a good way to approach life or not? One can get too focused on the negative, in one's quest to be noble and stoic, and miss out on every day joys, if one views life as a string of suffering. My wife's stoic Dutch family has a completely different world view than my family of origin, which had a depression/WWII era "put on a happy face" attitude. Neither way is "right", I suppose. One way ignores or discounts positives things, one way can lead to denial and failure to talk about things that matter to people. Hmm.

Not sure what those random, "just got up" thoughts mean. But looking at life as suffering through an endurance race may not be the correct approach.

...is just part of the life equation and is helpful at times. We will always have difficult and painful times. We will always face challenges and unfairness. How we choose to see things is like a lens that can alter the reality, be it positive or negative. The "lens" is also known as our attitude. I see "attitude" as the stuff we carry around with us. What we show up in the room with.

I guess we can also throw in the old saying,
"Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it."

Yeah, "part" of the life equation. That sounds right to me, rather than overall approach. The "attitude" part was what I was raised with. But I think in the last few years during the economic crash, and some other personal family losses, I may have spent too much time in the "pain cave" deciding that I would "just get through" whatever it was. Not every day certainly. I enjoy fun and laughter and joy. (See my new avatar pic for one area of joy in my life) But more often than earlier in life.

I was influenced early in life by a high school literature teacher who taught "Great English Authors" and focused on the "true mythical hero" the one not perfect in appearance but battle worn, and who "did not let the bad outweigh the good, nor ignore the bad in favor of the good" (as a popinjay would). Basically, eyes wide open, not getting too bummed nor too giddy, but seeing all there is in life. That, and a good attitude for whatever comes your way has been a good approach. Spending life "in the pain cave" should only be part of the equation.

I'll just say there's nothing I hate more now than the government in general and fucking pigs specifically.
They lie, cheat and steal and tell you it's for your own good and more of it will make us happier and safer.
Fucking assholes.

I'll say that whatever hurt I've experienced has seemed to .... almost burn some kind of toughness into me if you follow me? When some have had tragedies it's made me seem maybe a little untouched by it. Don't get me wrong, I'm plenty emotional over other friends hurts and tragedies and deaths but it's almost like there's a part of me that ... just isn't allowed to react so I can survive and get thru the day.

It showed up when my wife was going thru her medical issues and miscarriage and it showed up when my father-in-law passed away. It's like....when everything is falling apart someone has to hold the pieces together. I'm affected, it just might not seem like it.

SSDD ...or SSDP (P= party, people, president, politics, etc.) I'll keep this as non-partisan as possible since it applies to both sides of the aisle.

Having watched so many friends get eaten by their extreme anger, I've worked hard to not let the political world get to me anymore. There is very little we can do other than voting that makes an actual difference. The newly elected end up becoming the assholes we tried to replace. Real power is something us wage earners and small business owners will never see so we have to accept that reality and keep moving.

Look around and we see so many people angered to a point of giving themselves a stroke, or at least living a painful existence leading to a shortened life.
That sure ain't what we were put here for.

I'm gonna be honest. My guilt over how I reacted to my friend's situation is really getting to me.
And my loathing for the system that knowingly railroaded an innocent man is pretty deep right now.
I'm gonna have to find a way to deal with it or I'm afraid it's gonna cause real damage to me.
The guilt over doubting my friend is the worst. I honestly can't see right now how I'm going to work through that. I've never felt anything like this before. I feel like a true hypocrite and that's the one thing on earth I despise more than anything.

Guilt is okay in small doses. If it is overwhelming, get some help with it; it can destroy you. I know from experience.

Quite understandable for you and your friend's situation. I've seen the system and cops pull some shit on people that ruined their lives, or in my step son's situation could have if Mrs. T didn't see what was in the wind.
Never trust a cop *, even when you are a victim. I know that by personal experience.

*I know a few really good cops so I don't mean to use too broad of a brush here.

Gary, I've always been a pretty level headed "deal with it" kinda guy. Water off a duck's back is how I deal with most crap in life. I learned that from dad. You can't change what you can't change. Put your head down and keep pushing.
That's always works for me, as I've tried to live my life according to principles. If i do nothing to be ashamed of, I have no guilt.
But I'm incredibly ashamed at how I doubted my friend. He's one of the few people I had implicit faith in all these years and I allowed those assholes to convince me he was a liar. And they did it with lies! Man, I tell you, I'm hatin on some people today, myself included. I'm perhaps more angry at myself for allowing them to deceive me. It hurts.

Live and learn seems trite, but really that is the thing in this case. the true facts are often not apparent from the press coverage or info available in any court case, criminal or civil. Don't beat yourself up too much. Learn, and then live. I am sure your friend would agree.
