Who else is fed up with car culture and the auto obsession ?

I think the biggest problem with cars is that there's just too many of them. transportation is neck-and-neck with power generation as the biggest greenhouse gas contributor, and light duty vehicles is the largest part of the transportation contribution.
i don't know.....the environmentalists say that cow farts are way up that list.

I catch myself looking for the yellow blindspot indicator LEDs in newer cars I'm passing (or being passed). They're usually in their side mirrors.

I've been pretty impressed with how well most of them work detecting a motorcycle in either side (driver/passenger) of the adjacent lane.

I dunno which environmentalists say that, but they're wrong. 1) it's actually cow burps, not farts that release the majority of the methane that cows produce and 2) agriculture as a whole contributes waaaay less carbon than transportation, power generation, and industrial production (which are the biggest 3 pieces of the pie)

They do work well, however they can be an aggravation if you use a radar detector. Proximity and adaptive cruise control systems often share frequencies with the K band. My radar detector can filter them out, but a vehicle with these features can set off a detector a quarter-mile away.

Both our new cars have the blind spot indicators. I consider them one of the truly useful innovations, along with the rearview camera.

The lane assist dealie can blow me. It constantly fights you even if you are doing your best to stay where it wants in between the lines, and it can be fooled if the lines are faint or the lighting is poor. Blow me, lane assist! At least you can turn it off.

I couldn't be bothered to read this whole thread so forgive me if this was posted.
There is a VW commercial where two guys get out of the car and the passenger says "Aren't you gonna lock it?" and the driver says "No, it's a stick shift"
LMAO

Haven't read the entire thread, can't do it. What I did read was a silly debate over a bunch of shit that is more political than anything else.

"Car Culture" is at best, a misnomer. It's a sweeping generalization of ludicrous proportions. Just like Music Culture... one size does not fit all. Ever.

I consider myself a "Car Guy" because I love a lot of things about "cars". I love the incredible ingenuity, the groundbreaking engineering, the often beautiful styling, the deft balance between form and function etc.

I don't like Hotrods, not big on classic American muscle, I hate "Rat Rods" and the "Culture" behind them. I think drag racing and cars who's only purpose is a fast 1/4 mile time are stupid. I'll take a slower car with grace, poise, and beauty over that shit all day long. Give me a car that can stop and turn, and I'm happy. I love to drive, it's a very liberating experience, and on track days is stupid fun.

I'm as environmentally conscious as any good liberal, and I celebrate the ever growing increases in mileage along with an equal lessening of harmful emissions. I want more electric cars on the road, and I like that makers like Ferrari and Porsche are embracing hybrid drivetrains. I know the days of the internal combustion engine are quickly ticking down. But, in the meantime, I also celebrate the incredible leaps in efficiency that make the old phrase "No replacement for displacement" an antiquated falsehood. How great is it that a modern 4cyl motor can develop more BHP than the most muscled muscle cars of the 60s, 70s, 80s etc while getting 5x the mileage and with 10% of the carbon footprint? They do all of that while being magnitudes safer and more reliable, and with astounding creature comforts and handling/driveability.

I've had more than my share of nonsensical toy cars that guzzled gas or were capable of race car performance. I didn't drive them every day. They had their time and place, but I'm not an asshole just for owning them (plenty of other much more valid reasons why I'm an asshole). I could go out this afternoon and buy another if I wanted. I'm often tempted, but so far have been able to resist. But, if I truly wanted a Ferrari, I'd just buy one.

Instead, I do 95% of my daily driving in a tiny, 101BHP FIAT 500 that gets 40MPG. My "fun" car is yet another FIAT (124 Abarth Spyder) with a whopping 180BHP and slightly worse mileage, and is essentially a Mazda Miata in an Italian suit. I love them both. I'm not at all ashamed of that fact.

My wife's crosstrek has that and it works pretty good The most annoying aspect of it, to me, is how it often thinks you're departing the lane when traffic patterns change on one side, like merging on an off-ramp.

I can not get on with the rearview camera...shite sandwich it is....I always give it a go backing cars up at work but it only takes a couple seconds to revert to the rearview and sideview mirrors.....it's too much like a video game :embarrassed:

The other important thing to consider is that in many passenger side mirrors, objects are closer than they appear. The average driver doesn't know that.

Foolish mammals. They never learn.

I've owned several 4 Cylinder cars and most have horrrrrible sounding exhausts. The Porsche 944 was an exception to that. I'm actually looking forward to high performance silent cars (Rimac, Nio, Tesla, etc) over the whine of a small 4cyl. My favorites are the electric assisted 6's and 8's like Porsche, McLaren, and Ferrari.

I wish I could find an electric conversion garage like this in our area!

It's hard to get a 4 cylinder to sound good. Most of what I hear on the roads is a loud, obnoxious noise, like a rolling weed eater.

I still have the stock exhaust on my Focus, though I'd really like to replace it with something that's not as quiet as it is, but I have yet to hear a system that doesn't sound like crap. Borla makes a decent cat-back system, and I may opt for that once the car is out of warranty.

why? A cat back would have no impact on your warranty. If you want one, go for it

I guess I'm just a bit leery about doing much of anything to it before the warranty runs out. I know you're correct, but I've heard of quite a few stories where dealers tried to wiggle out of warranty work, blaming aftermarket parts. That being said, even Ford offers a pretty decent cat-back system. I just need to do it.

YEP.

"Yeah... um... your air conditioning broke because of... umm... insufficient back pressure caused by your aftermarket exhaust."

Fucking finger pointers.

Folks post about that on the internet but I honestly never experienced a single issue with warranty or recall work on cars with obvious and not so obvious modifications at a dealership and don’t know a single person who has except when the modification directly caused the issue.

Many dealers are doing mods as a DSO in another attempt to make money.

The only time that would hold me back is if the mods are extensive or I know the dealership has a track record of being dicks about things.

I'm pretty sure if I had my dealer install a FRPP exhaust, they'd have no issues with it.
