What kind of crap is this? (Used Fender edition)

I bought this same guitar in 1991 or 92, brand new Gun Metal Blue American Standard Strat for about $600 bucks (maybe $550). It is not a vintage instrument and it's just a stock instrument. Despite mine sounding and playing great, I would think it's value (admittedly being far less pristine than this guitar) is a maybe a hundred or two above what I paid for it. These folks seem to be completely fucking confused:

These fuckers think it's worth $1,699...that's just $200 less than a new Eric Jophnson Strat!

Reverb concurs with my evaluation, which obviously doesn't mean shit, but this is crazy!

i've got a '96 MIA Strat Plus Deluxe, that is several models UP from that one.
maybe i can get $2400 for it.

Huh. Normally I would write this off as people being morons but I've bought and gotten a fair prcie from the Music Zoo before (I bought my Suhr Badger 30 from them) so maybe they know something I don't.
 
Weird. I have a 94 strat plus that was around 600 new. It is a great guitar, but it isn't worth that kind of money

Actually, I know there's this notion among some that the first batches of U.S.-made post-CBS Strats and Teles are special. So maybe it's some pre-1990 pricing where some of the these guitars were built by some of the same builders that eventually worked at the custom shop and became "master builders". That said, there are comparably aged Am Std Strats on Reverb not hitting the $1000 mark...most lest than $800.
 
Why is it I only buy the great guitars that go DOWN in value?

I have a couple of early 90's Jap Charvels and they were $700-$800 new.

Great guitars, btw......but I am pretty sure you could pick one up in good condition for $400.

I'd put a for sale add on CL and see if I can drawn in a sucker. In fact I've got $2500 Squier out now just waiting.
 
It's obvious he was forced by the wife to sell some guitars. He overprices it so nobody will buy it. Tells wife that he tried. She grumbles. He smiles and rocks the fuck out of that sweet Strat

Supply and demand are important factors. A generic Fender gets expensive if Fender only made that finish for a few years, only sold a few, and those guitars were only sold at one chain.

The color was seemingly around for at least five years, but I can't speak to where it was sold outside of the former Ossining Music where I bought mine new in 1992.
 
This comes close - I thought it was close to the gunmetal blue color but I doubt it would sell for $1600 - it's MIM after all - I got it for a freaking steal a couple months back but I like it a lot.

Had no idea it's kind of a rare color. I like the color, it's kind of uncommon. It has the diamond 60th anniversary logo on the back of the headstock, it's a piece of aluminum with the 60th logo stuck on there.
