This is the PRS 305… the happy place between the Custom 22 and a Strat… from before John Mayer came on board and helped make the Silver Sky.

The set maple neck has a strat 25 1/2” scale length which no others had at the time. The closest was the 513 which had a 25 1/4” scale and shared these controversial design of pickups.

I have always been obsessed with the 513 birds.... they are the perfect combination of their signature look, while being somewhat subdued compared to the normal pearl or shell "blingy" birds. They're more legible than something like the Jem vine, but are just different enough from the typical blocks, triangles, or dots.

I tried the stock pickups out for a while and they sound pretty decent... but I already have some suitable replacements on my bench to experiment with. :baimun:

Can't believe I didn't think of the 305...super sweet.

Was the scalloped nut a PRS thing or was that done afterwards. I know PRS didn't pioneer it, but I don't remember them really talking it up. That said, I used to be obsessed w/ PRS, but that went away for about a decade and I've just been following them again more closely in the last 5 yrs or so. Looks like it was feature of the guitar.

The only thing I'd change if I could would be a maple board, BUT it's surely awesome as is.

The inlays are still too much for me, but I like those better than the usual PRS suspects. Those are the stock pickups?

The scalloped nut was a thing that Paul did for a while on the 513 and the 305. It went away around the time that the specific inlays did. I have always thought it was kinda cool and have some of those nuts on other PRS that I own.
 
So, how do you go about swapping pups in a guitar like this? That's not a universal route for any type of pups...they always reminded me of the ones Fender put in the Strat Elites.

Very interested to know what you're thinking. Also wondering what you spilled for this, but you obviously don't have to share.

I have a set of non-standard pickups that I had been thinking about what strat to put them in.... and then it hit me that they would be right at home in this guitar, particularly with their wiring options.

Hopefully I can get these installed this week. :helper:

So the only question remaining.. if the model “305” represents 3 pickups with 5 sounds…

… and I swapped the 5 way for a 6 way (when you go past the neck selection it chooses neck plus bridge)… and the push/pull can change the amount of windings on the bridge and neck which will apply to 5 of the 6 sounds…

… doesn’t that technically make my guitar the 311? :helper:
