Tower fans , any of you own one? How effricient are they?...school me

it's fucking (rickenvox) hot as shit here, go figure...the desert !
I have two regular old oscillating floor fans which I bought like ten years ago and there is a ceiling fan above my bed and one above the dining room table. My ac is woefully inefficient as fuck (rickenvox) due to this place being built in 1949. It struggles to cool down.

I see these tower fans ...are they any good? I see this brand "Vornado" which is really supposed to circulate the room air good...around 500 cfm. This would be used in a small backroom or the living room...,..,

This video is useless and i recommend you not watch it UNLESS you are high on weed or kerouac.,

I am now a proud Vornado owner as well....seems like quality, comes with a 5 year warranty . i got the 184 model. I like the fact that there is no oscillating (less shit to potentially fail) seems quiet and seems like good airflow. hopefully it will make a difference in cooling costs and overall coolness factor......the desert can be a bastard at times (everyday from noon till about 9 pm).
I'm hoping the "patented" "V flow" really is what it says and not a gimmick...i.e I hope it circulates and moves air across the broad spectrum rather than a narrow band. The basic oscillating fan works great when it's blowing on you and does move air fairly well but...usually noisey and not all are created equal (some dont have a wide oscillation) AND when it is not flowing on you it;s like chinese water torture waiting for the return blow.....

could the tower style be a game changer...:shrug: I hope so. I will report my findings so as to be a helper.
 
Ok it says it’s 91 outside and I got my thermostat set to 83 and so far so good!, the ac has not kicked on yet. Yesterday was the first time I turned on the ac this season and I waited till it was 85 inside...probably a mistake because it wasn’t.t until late at night it finally start3d cooling down.
I had the oscillating floor fan going at this time ysterday when it was 94 degrees outside and it felt MUCH hotter.
I’ve got it on speed number two and I’m about ten feet away and I can not only feel a breeze on me constantly but I do beli be it is circulating the air better and thus leading to the overall cooler feeling.
It still too early to tell but so far this thing seems like a great investment. It is quite comfy and cool at 83.
I will update later down the road Vornado is legit *spits*

the problem is many...

number 1 is as I said this place was built in 1949...casement single pane windows. three doors , two with single pane slidng windows, a crawlspace underneath and an attic crawl space above...lotta drafts and gaps. These houses in the southwest from those eras were never designed for ac. it was swamp coolers and I'm damn near considering throwing some money at mine and running that this summer (i haven't run it since probably 2013 so it would need a lot of work)

number two is I do not own the place I'm a long time renter here. landlady got a new HVAC unit installed for me in febuary 2012 but it was my choice whether to get a yearly maintanence package...being skint as i am it wasn't broke so I don't fixed it :wink:...I didn't want to pay 100 or more for a guy to come out and hook gauges up and pic his nose (remember I'm an auto mechanic so i know how some of those "maintanence things go like doing 100,000 mile maintenance ..."check the tightness of all body bolts...uh, yeah sure thing :wink: ") If it needs repair she pays but maintanence is on me. There could be air duct leaks because she had a place do a cheap roof job two years ago. Last year the copper condensation drain pipe I found cracked from when they moved it so i had to repair that with a pvc set up.

it's most likely a bit low on refridgerant or i have an air duct leak at a main point (all the registers feel the same) because this bastard will not keep up anymore in the height of the heat period (3-10 pm) once it cools down outside a bit it blows cooler air. i will say the attic gets intensley hot though. when i had roof leaks a few years back i went up a few times in august and it was a damn furnace up there so I'm sure those air ducts take some time to cool down.

I seriously think I might do the swamp cooler up though, in fact 99 percent sure I will next weekend.. it's 95 degrees outside and it's 90 inside (feels cooler though with the shades drawn and the new fan). at 4 pm it was 83 inside and then the unit kicked on and within 45 minutes it's up to 90....I might as well turn it off and save money.

even when this new HVAC unit was brand new it was still expensive to run. back then I set it at like 80 degrees 24/7 and I would have bills in the 200 dollar range from june through september(the rest of the year my bill is around 40 bucks each month). over the last few years it was set 82/.83 but there was always about a two degree swing so it would get to 87 frequently in the late afternoon. it's been years since i ran a swamp cooler ful, time but the beauty of that is you can just crank it (this one is two speed) and it will freeze you out in the dry desert until the first week of July....the bad part is floats stick, water lines clog and there's a shit ton of maintenance....but overall it's cheaper and probably more efficient in a old house in the desert.

these are the joys of living in a dry heat :embarrassed:
 
If it was my house, "and I understand it's not your house, renting" I would try to get more ventilation in the attic to cool it down. Do you have much of a breeze? If yes, then put some of those turbine things on roof. If not, some electric powered fan. Are the ducts up in the attic insulated? Wrapping them would kill two birds with one stone. Again, I understand not your house but, if you have high recurring bills... or talk to landlady about doing something.
 
...and if the attic s that hot, it's not doing her roof that she pays for any good.
