The second "oops" of the Olympic Games

I thought this was going to be about the lack of USA presence on the half-pipe podium. Pretty disappointing night for Team USA.
 
It's not unexpected that the Europeans have started thrashing the formerly dominant US and Canadian snow boarders.


Snow boarding was previously the hobby of some weed smoking snow hippies.... but once you get Europeans applying the training and precision that they use in skiing, you end up with a field of North American athletes saying "Duuuude.... those dudes are righteously kicking our asses. That's, like a major bummer."

I remember when the Europeans got into mountain biking. It wasn't long before they started crushing us.
American MTB races still have plenty of beer flowing afterward. chears
 
Agree with the majority -- she could zip the suit down to her knees and it would likely only be slightly titillating...
 
I'd like to take a moment and say if anyone hasn't seen the movie "Rush" (about F1 racing) you should. Part of the rivalry between the two main drivers is based on this premise. (even moreso than in the real life drivers the movie is based on).

I liked Sage Kotsenberg's style he displayed enroute to his slope style gold. His flair (which reminded me of surf moves and dogtown style skate moves, Can you say Bertleman turn?) , and enthusiasm and friendliness were really fun to see. To me, he showed what snowboarding is about. Whether he smokes or not, I have no idea. But I like what he was showing, more than even more technical moves with less flair and style. That is the problem when you start to judge a sport like that. That is one reason though I am enjoying watching this (and the US is back on top with the ladies today), I am more a fan of "sessions" where athletes throw down for fun mostly, rather than taking something like freestyle skiing was, and turning it into what it is now. Still fun to watch, but far, far removed from what it was.

There was a segment on TV where they got a couple participants to define some snowboarder slang. Funny stuff.

The only one I remember is a "yard sale" - that's when a skier crashes and his/her gear is scattered all over the place. :tongue:

That's actually pre-snow boarding, but we'll give you credit for enjoying the term (since I still use it!).
 
Yeah, yard sale is still in use. More skier than boarder as skiers have more stuff to throw around, two skis, poles, etc. Snowboarders don't come out of their board when they fall typically. They just tumble.

Knuckledragger is what some are called by close-minded skiers.

I took it as snow boarders having a little fun at the skiers' expense, since as you say they aren't burdened with all the paraphernalia that skiers tend to have.

And the interviewer was supplying the terms, the 'boarders just responded, so it wasn't like they were claiming to have invented it.
 
@tiger roach , as well they should. (poke fun at skiers). Snowboarders seem to have a ton of fun. Some skiers, but not all, take it too seriously. So much fun to be had ripping through the snow no matter what gear you are on. My freeride team has groups, usually teens, where the skiers and boarders go rip the pow together, as they are friends at school, etc. They have a ton of fun!

I like snowboarding and surfing, but I have a hard time analyzing them and taking them all that seriously as a competitive sport. The judging is so subjective. It not like football where you either put the ball in the end zone or not. One guys awesome trick is another's meh. To me it a fun thing to do and really does't lend itself to scoring. At least with ski jumping you can judge distance an downhill can judge speed. This stuff is just a judges opinion, and their opinion doesn't matter much to me.
