... but I fail to find much wrong with this guitar.



When he talks about the fretwork... and that "broink..." of the A string.... I know exactly what he's talking about. I can pick up a cheap or expensive instrument, and the shape of the neck and the first strum, I often can tell if it's not a guitar for me. It may be fine for various players... but there are certain ergonomic things that just don't work for my playing style, and some cheap guitars don't wince at.

My only problem with it is that Strat-style guitars don't work for me. I have owned a couple over the years and can't bond with the sound.

The cork sniffers can look down all they want; Paul Reed Smith designed a license to print money with the Silver Sky. You know who’s not looking down? The c-suite MBAs at Fender who dropped John Mayer and didn’t expect him to land somewhere better. That move has cost them lots of guitar sales and the SE models are going to make it worse.

Sure PRS is mainly known for set necks, but they have a whole line of bolt-ons now, not just the Strat. Er, I mean, "Silver Sky."

PRS makes great guitars in their core, S2, CE, and SE lineups. I'm sure these new import strat models are going to be similar.

The biggest limitation that company has as a brand is the douchebaggery of so many of the owners, or perhaps a particularly loud subset of exceptional assholes.

I never quite understood the rants on these kind of things. It is a fucking guitar. If you like it, buy one, if you don't move along and go play what you do like. If you don't think these are real PRS guitars, go watch a video of Paul Reed Smith talking about the development of the guitar as part of their core series. Paul doesn't give a fuck if some knob on the internet doesn't think a bolt on guitar should be part of the core line up. No one really should.

No doubt. Lower priced guitar manufacturing at scale has closed the quality gap in a lot of ways and basic 'cheap' components have improved to the point that the quality gap is narrower than ever.

I’m not the target market for any kind of John Mayer guitar and I’m too image conscious/wary of getting bagged on by the people I play music with to buy a PRS, but the US Silver Skys/Skies I’ve personally tried have been fine strat-type guitars.

However, I cannot abide this SE Silver Sky rollout because it has clogged guitar social media with the worst kinda of cliche strat playing/tones. I don’t care that John Mayer is a good life partner to @Frank Prince and a newly generous lover, I don’t need to hear PGS Andy slinging lukewarm ‘80s yuppie blooze on the Gram.

I think it's hard in general for any strat/tele/lp copy demo to avoid the need to prove it cashes those checks the appearance writes. Lump in that it's Mayer's sig guitar and you can't really get away from it.

I very much dig this guitar and would seriously consider buying one if it came w/ a maple board. But I would compare it w/ a Fender Player series and see which one I liked better. I'm a big fan of PRS and Fender guitars, own two of each, while my other two electrics are Tele variants.

My biggest knock is that it's a John Mayer model. John's a very good, if generic sounding, guitar player. All the tones he's getting out this Silver Skies are Strat tones, specifically Strat tones mimicking Clapton's and SRV's. You don't need the SS to get those sounds. Ideally the guitar would have just been another PRS and not a Mayer model, but that wouldn't stop me from getting the guitar. I just wouldn't be trying to emulate him/his emulation of Clapton/SRV. This is my favorite demo so far because John doesn't try to play like Mayer or Mayer's stuff, just checking out the tones.



I found his dedication to learning the Dead's catalog and Jerry's style quite impressive, as it reminded me of Dweezil learning his dad's stuff and becoming a guitarist worthy of being in his father's band...as good or better than any of the other guys that have been in the band, except for Keneally who's a freak of a musician. But Dweezil's was a far more rigorous endeavor and playing music that I love.

I'm very okay w/ the 3x3 headstock, but I'd definitely prefer a dot/moon inlay version...again, w/ a maple board.
