I had a 95 tele that had been 'upgraded' with Fendler noiseless PUs. They were pretty uninspired, to my ears. However, I've not tried the samarium cobalt or other newer developments in this line, but personally, I have rarely had a major issue with hum...

I think it depends on where you live and play. Here in Boulder most of the city has shoddy wiring so plain single coils and P-90s aren't so great.

Here too. It's impossible for me to play a stock strat in any of the rooms I regularly play.

The 2 "single coil" looking humbuckers that I have found to suit my taste are the Lace Sensor Gold, and the Fender Vintage Noiseless. I actually like the Vintage Noiseless a touch better than the Lace Sensor, but if I ever get my Strat with the Gold's back (loaned it out for someone to try an electric, and he seems to be taking a very long time to decide whether he likes it), I intend to play with the pickup height a bit more to see if I can dial it in.

Yeah, I'd rather live in Boulder, too.
 
Doesn't seem to be a lot of love here for SC-sized rail HBs, but I've had good results with those in both teles and starts (bridge position)

I've been looking at the Dimarzio Chopper T, but I think it might be too hot for what I want.
 
You can get "hot" rails or cool rails -- there's some variability in the SD line -- but not sure about DiMarzio.

Duncan is custom winding a Little Pearly Gates, but I don't feel like paying $160 for it. Right now I'm between the Chopper and the Area Hot T. Or just routing for a full size humbucker.

Sounds like shit is a strong judgement. Doesn't sound like what they are supposed to be is a better descriptor IMO. Like Fralin's noiseless p90's. They are good, maybe even great for what they are, but they AREN'T the best sounding p90.

And they never will be. Because a P90 is a single coil pickup. The Fralin is a humbucker. No humbucker can ever sound like a single coil. It can get nice and close, but it'll never be the same.

Guitarists need to stop chasing the tones of others, and go after their own. Then they'll never be disappointed that a pickup isn't *insert ________ guitarist here* enough.

Also, if I win Powerball, expect to be put on retainer. :embarrassed:
