The ongoing saga

Help!I'maRock!

Mediocringly Derivative
I've been reading @BlockInlay's tribulations of the Line 6 HXFX both here and on the TGP digital forum (which is like the 6th level of Hell), and I've got it down to two options.

Option 1: BOSS ES-8

8 loops
All of my own pedals
I can use 2 expression pedals
Control parameters on 4 pedals that have expression capabilites (TZF, Aquavibe, Quasar, EHX DMB)
Control the Eventide Pitchfactor via MIDI
Switch on the reverb and tremolo on my Allen OR change channels on my Mesa

Option 2: Line 6 HXFX
Mix in some unique pedals in either of the two loops (Quasar and maybe some dirt; Echorec and TZF)
1 expression pedal
Control either the Allen or the Mesa

At this point, if Line 6 fixes their firmware issues, I'm leaning that way. We shall see.

If I can throw a third option (depending on what you're trying to accomplish)... http://saturnworkspedals.com/

Bryan is building me a custom loop/path switch where I can switch in and out 4 different loop paths, and then the tail out can do A/B/Y but all in one tidy little package that fits into the space I have on the pedal board.

Oh, and he's using custom graphics I made for it.

I want a smart switcher so I can turn on multiple effects at the same time. AFIAK, Saturnworks only does the TB loop thing.

What sounds do you need that you are missing from the pedals you already have?

Cool. I needed to be able to switch between guitar, octaved dropped sound (bass), drum triggered by guitar, vocals or any simultaneous combination thereof into my two loopers at the same time. The ABY is so I can lay down a loop track and choose which looper it goes into or even duplicated on both loopers so I can stack different things ontop of that base loop depending on which of the 6 channels I choose.

It's not really about need. It's about control and getting the most for my dollar.

What I'm getting at, is if you have all the sounds you need, the switcher and what you have is the way to go. I doubt the Line 6 will have anything that sounds as good as the Echorec, the Aquavibe or the Eventide.

In the end, what will the Line 6 give you that the switcher with your current gear won't? Other than a massive headache when it it doesn't boot or totally shits the bed? Mark has been using the Boss for a while and if he hasn't killed it, it can't be killed

I could probably live under the board required for the ES-8. An HXFX board would undoubtedly be more manageable.

Is the ES-8 the one with the built in effects and 3 loops?

No, that's the MS-3. The ES-8 is an 8 loop smart switcher. I'd still end up swapping out effects which is why I'm so-so on it. Also, if I get the HXFX, I can sell stuff it replaces, which basically makes it free.

Anyone on here use the MS-3? It appears to be feature rich but I’ve only seen promo videos of it.

I haven't used one. The dealbreaker for me was the 3 loops are always in series. So you can place the loop block anywhere you want in the signal chain, and you can turn them on and off individually, but the loop block moves together. You can't assign them to different places within a preset.

Fuck. That.
