the Nutbuster, a floating locking nut?

Seems like it'd still go out of tune if the string binds in the nut?

And I don't see how the fine tuners could actually work? Fine tuners on a bridge shorten/lengthen the string...how do the fine tuners do that on this thing?

Yeah, I saw this earlier and thought it was the stupidest thing ever. If your guitar needs this thing... you need a better guitar. Or at the very least, a new nut. I call bullshit.

I don’t have any tuning issues with my 6 screw strat vibrato and locking tuners. Get the nut properly cut and you’re fine.

Christ on a fuckstick…just buy locking tuners.

The guitar he put this thing on already had locking tuners... good ones.

I finally watched the entire video and came away with a different opinion and some revelations. Firstly, the dude needs a new nut because his tuning went WHACK on it's own. Secondly, this stupid thing actually appears to work quite well. I understand the concept better now and I can see how effectively locking the strings TOGETHER can sort of force them back to that neutral point. It really did do exactly that. The fine tuners must be extremely "fine" compared to those on a regular locking trem system. They have to be very limited in range. If a single string goes off by more than tiny increment, you're gonna have to unlock it and tune it from the mains.

Hate to say it, but his results seemed legit. So I guess it does what it's supposed to do, but you shouldn't need one if your guitar is working properly.

Price seems to be the biggest obstacle with the NutBuster. At first I scoffed at the price and gimmicky popped in my head. Even some of the post say things like "if you need this than you need a new guitar". When you have a gig the last thing you want to do is tune between every song. I've got a Gibson Paul and a Fender Stratocaster. The tuning sucks on both. I use both. The Les Paul tuning is tolerable. The Stratocaster is unacceptable. The Stratocaster I've had the longest and I've invested the most.

I had a friend that I worked with that needed some cash and asked me if I wanted to his Stratocaster for $250. The next day he brought it in and showed it to me. I took one look and asked him if he wanted large or small bills. As it turns out, the Stratocaster is a 2004 Limited Edition Lite Ash Stratocaster made in Korea. It came stock with a birdseye maple neck and fretboard, ash body, Seymour Duncan single coil pickups and the American Elite bridge. Like most Stratocaster guitars, they have to be rebuilt before they're playable.

First thing to go was the nut and tuners. I installed a maple shim to correct the neck angle. Then, Fender locking turners and a roller nut. I'm really not a fan of 60 cycle hum so a Sigler 920D loaded pickguard with Seymour Duncan's Everything Axe. Not only can I split coils, I can have the bridge and finger board together. And last but not least, Graphtek saddles and string trees. Even tried putting graphite on all the contact points. The guitar plays and sounds great...when it's in tune.

So what's next? A Floyd Rose? I do miss the Floyd Rose I had on a Hamer years ago with fine tuners. That would be a major modification and cost more than $175. As for gimmicky, the roller nut is gimmicky. The design with string trees has always been a problem for Fender. The engineering behind the NutBuster is valid. The design goes right to the source of the problem. For what I have invested in the Stratocaster I could break even if I sold it but I wouldn't be the same. I'm willing to roll the dice one more time. If this "NutBuster" does what they say it does than it will be worth it. Would you put a $15 filter in front of a $1000 lens. Quality comes at a price.

Not wanting to watch a Darrell Braun video, I looked for others.
Still don't understand how this thing suppose to work, but I've found a guy
who does a lazy MAB impersonation:

Weird idea is weird, and seems unnecessary.

Also, I just looked it up...it sells for $174.95

pretty sure that’s the guy who sells them

Edit: I say sells them because from the example in that vid, they look mfg’d overseas not exactly to a high standard.

I think Kahler showed us 35 years ago that that behind the nut solutions just don't work. This is just the Kahler "locking string tree" without the wood screws.

If you going to use a Floyd and/or dive bomb, use a proper locking nut. There really is no substitute to locking the string tension at the nut and saddle.

Reminds me of the mid 80's Japanese Strat I had. That locking nut/string tree behind the regular nut thing was just pointless bullshit, and really didn't work at all.
The guitar itself was wonderful though.

Was that the System 1 bridge? A friend owned one I used a lot, but even 20 years ago it was impossible to get replacement parts for it, I wonder if some industrious fabricator ever released any?

Yep, it was. I think OGG still has one of those if I remember right.
Absolutely impossible finding parts for it apart from ebay. Don't think I've seen anyone make any parts post 80's that fit.

And...the spacing for the bridge was very much non-standard, so you'd have to do some routing if you were to replace it.

Kept playing mine until the frets were worn out. In storage these days, was my first guitar so I can't bring myself to getting rid of it.

Locking tuners won't help if your nut is shit.

Everybody seems to think tuning issues come from the tuning keys. It's actually the points where your strings possibly bind, so the nut and the saddles.

The only reason I can think of this working is that all the strings are locked to each other so the string tension of the other strings returns the "out of tune" strings back to position.

If the nut is shit, it'll still tell you to fuck off.

He looks like the same engineer that designed the NutBuster installed some new teeth for him.

Exactly. The #1 reason why I'm never getting another Gibson btw, but that's a whole other can of worms.... :embarrassed:

That said, I love locking tuners though, but that's more a convenience thing.
