The most awful thing I've heard Van Halen do

What is it? (Youtube blocked at work).

They put out quite a bit of cheese from '86-'95 and the album they released with Gary Cherone in '98 was mostly unlistenable.







Still, the worst thing I've ever heard by them was the live version of Jump from the Greensboro NC show on the last tour. I was there and it sounded horrible live, but when I saw the clip on youtube it sounded even worse.

Apparently what happened was the prerecorded keyboard track got played back at 48 khz instead of 44.1 or something, thus, Ed spent the entire song trying to find the key and retuning his guitar to no avail.

It was a terrible end to a great show. :facepalm:

Is the song "Not Enough"?  Starts on the piano and Ed switches over to a black Wolfgang after the intro?

I remember seeing that back in '95 when it originally aired.  I'd just seen them in concert in Charleston WV a few days earlier.  :embarrassed:


And the rest of that Greensboro show was great.  It's a shame that the one song that gets any mention from that show is the one that was a royal clusterfuck from beginning to end.

I saw them two other times on the tour, and Jump came off without a hitch both other times.  :grin:
 
After a band records a song like "Panama" it pretty much just doesnt matter how badly they screw up after that. VH still = 100 percent total win.
 
I'd go even further and say that VHI cemented their place in the Rock 'N' Roll history books, and even if they'd never recorded another album, they'd still be considered cream of the crop.

I do think that they did everything they could to diminish their reputations between about '95 and '07 though. I can overlook the fluff on some of the Sammy albums because the stuff that was good was great. The Cherone album, while it may have had some moments of great playing, was pretty meandering, didn't have much song structure, didn't sound at all like VH typically sounds, and was produced like crap.

I don't even want to talk about the '04 Sammy Reunion tour fiasco.

Luckily, the '07-'08 tour was pretty damned good, even though it would have been better if Michael Anthony had been involved. Maybe they'll hold it together long enough to record one more good album and do one more tour. idn_smilie

Wine Red Wolfgang, but otherwise dead on....

It isn't that bad of a song - it just isn't a Van Halen song - and Ed's solo is very lame by anyones standards. Sammy was way off in that performance as well. Portrait of a band on the way down....

They definitely are one of the great bands in rock music, but the 90's were pretty harsh for them.  The track on VHIII where eddie sings is terrible  messedup0

Yeah. I don't know what I'd do in that situation, if I were in the band.

I mean, I'm a firm believer in 'The Show Must Go On', so I'm not of the opinion that they should have stopped and tried again. However, maybe the sound guy should have muted the keyboard track or something. Or maybe Ed should have just turned his volume down and only played during the solo break using a bunch of dive bombs or something.

I don't really know.

Since my bands don't have midi tracks or prerecorded keyboard tracks, I don't guess I have to worry about it. :embarrassed:

I'd be on the horn to Ed's guitar tech to get him a in-tune guitar right away. Other than that - that is the danger of using sequencers, you are locked into what you are doing and cannot improvise your way out...
