In 1967 the Beatles released a ground-breaking record, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts club Band." It wasn't the first psychedelic rock album, but is was the first psychedelic rock album to be popular at such a grand scale--obviously the Beatles' reputation had something to do with this. To some this was their first exposure to psychedelic rock, some were already exposed to Jimi Hendrix, Big brother & the Holding Company with Janis Joplin, the Warlocks and to some extent Electric Flag. Jeff Beck was thinking about psychedelic-blues rock, Pink Floyd was struggling with how to sell psychedelic rock, and Vanilla Fudge was trying to figure out how to turn an already existing pop hit into a psychedelic rock anthem. But...But...But, the circle knows no end.
The Velvet Underground released an album in 1967; they were tired of a scene that hadn't even come to a boil when the masses got a hold of it--Woodstock was still two years away, and Monterey was just happening. That means that Janis hadn't gone solo yet, Jimi Hendrix didn't have major label backing and Owsley was still operating legally (If you tuned in, turned on and dropped out you'll know what this means).
While the mass public was getting comfortable with flower-power, Andy Warhol was changing the way we see America and Lou Reed was manifesting a heroin experience into a song, and Johnny Thunders was making the guitar work of Jimmy Page laughable.

-Joey Ramone showed us what amphetamines could do if in the right hands...
-Sid Vicious made noise, not music--but was still loved for it (I don't know why)...
-Suicide made people wonder what music could be...
-Minor Threat/Fugazi showed us that no sex, no drugs, and no alcohol resulted in as much intensity and aggression as any of the things they were saying no to...
Start something and it dies...No, get something started and it mutates and evolves--it builds and takes and spits out and continues forever.
