That pastrami thread got me thinking...

I'm sick of lunchmeat. And I'm not gonna take it any more.

And I'm not talking about the cut-rate stuff in the blisterpack from Safeway. Even the better stuff, like the deli pastrami I had on my sandwich from lunch, is thoroughly boring and blechy to me. It all has this processed texture that makes me gag.

I guess if I want to bring my lunch any more I'll have to cook stuff on the weekends that I can tote to the office. I can smoke a bird or beast and slice it mysel and make sandwiches from that. Somehow that tastes completely different - even though *real* deli meat is essentially the same thing.

*rant over*

I decided to go to Subway last week and thought I might try the new Pastrami deal they've been advertising the hell outa.

$9.

No F'n way.

$5 footlong or GTFO.

I tried that with turkey breast for awhile. It ended up being a bit on the pricey side, but the flavor and the 'knowing what is really in it' made it worthwhile. I need to go back to doing that.

Ever notice that when you microwave a sandwich that no matter what kind of lunch meat is on it, it smells exactly the same? And it's not a great smell.

Anyhow, the only freshly sliced deli lunch meat that really stands out from the crowd for me is roast beef. I've sort of taken a break from lunch meat, but I'll buy some Boar's Head Londonport roast beef every now and then.

I've been on a corned beef kick--anytime I go out and there's a corned beef anything, I'm ordering it. But I've been though "done with lunchmeat" phases. I switched over to chicken salad for a while.

After not eating much lunch meat for years I've suddenly become obsessed with salami. Cause if I'm gonna get obsessed with a food item its going to be as unhealthy as I can find it.

Once a month I buy Troyer brand deli meats, from the local Amish store. cists kessvthan half what the big grocery store charges for Boars Head.

Pastrami. It's kind of a local specialty around here.

My sandwich for today is made with leftover NY Strip steak that I grilled over the weekend. I don't expect to have any complaints about this one.

I haven't had luncheon meat in nearly 25 years, and I'd have to say I don't really miss it, other than for the convenience of a quick lunch. Every now and then I'll get this, but once a year is usually enough.
