TGP post/infraction of the day

I've never heard one before, but I have to agree with you. I just don't get the fact that people pay tens of thousands of dollars for one of his amps. I can buy that they sound great, but nothing sounds that great. I sound about the same through a fender gdec practice amp as I do through my mesa boogie...or any amp, for that matter.

Thing is, y'know...

I can't say that I've ever heard a boutique amp sound exponentially better than this, which is mass-produced, only slightly modified, if at all, and runs less than $1K.

So, the law of diminishing returns kicks in pretty quickly.

I say that as someone who loves hand-made instruments as much as anyone, but custom-built electric guitars and amplifiers don't really seem to reward the extra dollars spent in the same way that acoustics do.

Are Dumbles really THAT much better than a Behringer? I mean, come on now folks....

Sonny Landreth is enough of a Dumble-phile to name-check the amp in one of his songs. I've seen him many times, once with the Dumble. His tone killed. Another time with a Matchless. His tone killed. Another time with a loaner Marshall JCM2000 in a little theater in Maine. His tone killed.

Yep, gotta be the Dumble.

I'm sure they're fine amps but I hate the whole "magic bullet" mythology that certain pieces of gear get.

you mean like Strats and Les Pauls? :poke:

Actually, yes ...the last few weeks I've really re-bonded with my old US Hamer..it completely kicks my Strat and Les Paul in many ways...they're both great guitars..but this Hamer...it's got the "X" factor.

I'd have to agree, for the most part. I'm obviously not afraid of boutique gear but on the amp side I have yet to find anything that sounds better to my ears than my 1971 Deluxe Reverb. I've owned boutique amps in the past but generally they never stick with me. Not saying that they don't sound good but I seem to make due fairly well with black and silverface era Fenders.

No, i havent looked at it in quite awhile. I have discovered something very disturbing about myself, i am racist against insane people. I am one step away from putting a straightjacket on a stick and burning it in their front yard.

But i'll go take a look. :embarrassed:
