Talk box users... opinions please

cvogue

Yes, that's Oolong. :)
So my old Banshee talkbox is having some issues. Thinking about getting a different one. Anyone used the MXR talk box? I'm not impressed with the sound from what I've seen on the Youtube videos but you never know.

Also, anybody used the Banshee 2? It has an effects loop (which I probably wouldn't use) and it also has a setting where the guitar signal goes to your amp as well as through the internal amp/voice tube. I'm wondering how useful that feature is...

Thanks for any insight!

I have the Banshee 2. That feature is useful. My cover band occasionally does "It's My Life" by Bon Jovi, and it sounds better with both the guitar amp sound plus the talkbox sound simultaneously. As far as the fx loop? Never used it, though I'm sure it has some good application.

I think most folks favor the Banshee 2. Do you feel like we do?

Kidding, I have never used a talk box, I just saw an opportunity for a lame joke.

@Muppet is the only one I know here that used one.

The closet I got to using one was one of my very first pedal build eons ago. It was Craig Anderton circuit and used a Radio Shack tweeter for the speaker. Since the circuit I built had issues, I used my Big Muff Pi and a 2 watt home made amp and drove the Tweeter with that. Was planning to box it but never did. That was a lot of fun.

Today I do not know what I would do if I wanted to get one. Good Luck!!!

How loud is the Banshee 2? One thing apparently the MXR does well is have a good amount of volume. I've gotta crank my Banshee 1 to make it usable...

It's certainly a special effect. Who uses a tremolo for more than a handful of songs in a night? An eBow?

Never used an ebow, but will frequently use tremolo. Just always found the talkbox an extremely song-specific type of effect (like most uses of ring modulation and similar effects).

I use it on maybe 2 songs per gig. The aforementioned Bon Jovi song, Sweet Emotion, Show Me The Way, and if I throw a solo in the middle of Jeopardy by Greg Kihn it works there, too. But it's rare that we do more than 2 of those a night, usually only 1 of them. And, MAN that thing is heavy, too -- it adds what seems like 10 extra pounds to my board.

It is heavy... I have it separate from my board.

But I'll also say it's a huge crowd pleaser. Yeah, it's a bit of a parlor trick but it's fun.
