To all of the Internet Armchair Directors who are poo pooing on all of the similarities to the New Hope plot points.... I see it as a sins of the father, history repeating itself. But in this case the new characters are carving (some times literally :embarrassed: ) their own path through the repeat of the events. I think it pays tribute to the original three movies while passing the torch on to the new characters really well. Washes away the bad taste of the preview trilogy.

The only character that was disappointing to me was "Supreme Leader Snoke". The first shot of him so huge made me say "Whoooaaa..." but then his face wasn't scary, and the hologram thing makes me think that he's Yoda sized and pulling a "Great and Powerful Oz".

Other than that complaint.... enjoyed the entire ride. Had the same thrill from when I was 9 years old and watching the original movie.

Loved the humor and dialogue between the characters... none of that Episode I reading the side of a cereal box stiffness.

I've been having similar thoughts myself. It really feels like the folks who made this movie wanted to make damn sure that the audience was getting a Star Wars movie. Not a CGI shit show.

I was really impressed with the film, as a life long Star Wars fan. My wife doesn't care all that much about Star Wars but she loved it too and she's not a sci fi or action fan, generally.

Also, as a life long Star Wars fan, I felt devastated when Han bought the farm even though I was pretty sure it was going to happen. Some of my first memories are of playing with Han and Luke action figures and my son always let's me play Han when we play with his toys.

I thought Chewie was going to die.... but it makes sense that Harrison wanted Han to die in Empire. This is a much more story-propelling death IMO. The schizophrenic tear in Kylo Ren's mind is heartbreaking but also makes him a much more compelling villain.

When Han stepped onto that bridge and yelled "BEN!" my heart stopped for a second.

Yes that scene was a mind fuck...you knew it was coming but there was definitely a pause where it seemed like maybe Ren was going to repent.


Just thought of this, but when Finn asks Chewie if wasn't Solo a war a hero? Chewie just shrugs and does an eye roll sort of noise. haha
 
I'm a really big Star Wars nerd and over the years have read almost all of the Expanded Universe books, which were retconned as a result of Disney purchasing the franchise and deciding they wanted to go in a different direction. The fact that they retained the plot line of a villain being a child of the Solo's was great. Kylo Ren's actual reveal was a bit underwhelming, but that fresh new lightsaber scar will do him a world of good. I was expecting a Chewbacca death- like the books- but Han's death makes more sense. I wish they had expounded a bit more on the guilt that must be on Leia for asking Han to try to turn their son back to the light and considering the years of travel and life debt that Chewie owed Han it seemed like his own pain was marginalized. I think a little bit more time character building for the heroes (especially Rey) would have been nice too.

Visually it was completely stunning. I loved the combination of CGI with PRACTICAL EFFECTS. Abrams nailed that. I think character design and costuming was excellent and John Williams hasn't lost any of it's impact. I knew nothing about Daisy Riddley or John Boyega going in, but I really liked them both. Oscar Issac was probably my favourite new character. Adam Driver... I'm still unsure.He reminded me of Hayden Christiansen and not in a good way. Very emo and mopey.

I really enjoyed it overall and will probably go see it in theaters again. My biggest complaint was that there was almost no backstory to fill in the last 30-40 years; the destruction of the Republic had almost no effect, because we didn't know or care about it. Destroying Alderaan in a New Hope worked, because a space station that could destroy an entire planet was a horrifying prospect. The new superweapon being able to destroy several planets at once? Villainous, but not particularly impactful.

I'll give it four Sarlaacs out of five Boba Fetts.
 
Ooh and another thought; even though Rey was able to summon some focus to fight Kylo Ren, it seemed like a lot of that combat was fierce and relied on her anger at him. Seems like in the next film this could be an issue with her training...

Although, had she continued with anger, she would have lost.... she didn't get the upper hand until it dawned on her to relax and feel the light side of the force.

I almost get the feeling that they may have written more dialogue for Carrie Fisher, but she wasn't as convincing on screen as Harrison Ford. He nailed his parts so comfortably.
 
I thought it was better than the prequels, but only slightly better. Hopefully the next one will be what Empire was to a New Hope.
There were a ton of people at the the theatre for the non 3-D showings, but there were maybe 30 of us watching it in 3-D

I was skeptical during the first half hour or so - I thought the photography was a bit too dark, and kept thinking "these aren't my characters". That was quickly forgotten once things got moving, and I loved this movie.

I really liked Adam Driver's Kylo Ren - yeah, he had the angst thing, but unlike Hayden Christensen I found it believable, rather than whiny. They did Han's death well, I thought - I briefly thought he'd come over to the light there, and that would have been disappointing. I think Driver is giving us a more multifaceted villain, rather than a 1-dimensional cartoon.

I did think we'd get a bit more Luke in the movie - let's face it, the reason he's not in any of the promos is that he's not really in the movie. It certainly appears obvious that they're setting Rey up as his daughter, which make me wonder who the mother might be, or if we'll ever find out.

I enjoyed the fact that it somewhat mirrored "A New Hope" while still being very much its own movie, and an authentic Star Wars movie.
 
I was thinking Rey was Han and Leia's daughter. There was that brief scene about her parents leaving her there and her waiting for them. Interesting if she's Luke's daughter instead. Hmmmm.

Rey is a great character and well acted. My wife really dug her...which hopefully means greater leniency for me to buy star wars stuff...for the kids. Yeah for the kids to play with, that's the ticket.

THIRTY?

Our 7:embarrassed:0 started to fill up at 5:30 and they had to repeatedly have everyone move to the middle of the rows and not leave any empty seats. Every single one was full.

at 5:30 for the 7:embarrassed:0 show....

When it let out, the lobby was filled with people for the 10:embarrassed:0 showing.... I'm sure zero empty seats there as well.
 
Did it cross anyone else's mind, "What am I gonna do if there's a shooter in this theater?" I'm really sad to say it crossed mine. My plan was put my wife on the floor under the seats and cover as much of her as possible with me. What else do you do? Fucked up world we live in.

Not really. That sort of paranoid thinking is exactly what shooters want people to feel. Fuck them.
