You should go ask him for a real copy, or threaten to turn him in to microsoft and the BBB.
 
And it might be worth mentioning that federal courts look down on software piracy, especially companies selling it as legit product. The fines are substantial, like $10K per violation, and they can probably find every copy the guy sold in his records and basically destroy his business.
 
In his defense.... I bought a Windows license for a client from a very reputable looking website... when it arrived it looked fairly legit...

... looked like a normal white-box type purchase, but the holo-sticker looked funky.



Turned out to be they were reselling an OEM copy, which is technically not legit. We ended up having to buy another copy for the client and kept that shady one for an internal test machine.


This may or may not be the case... he may have knowingly sold you bogus software, but I'm just saying don't immediately assume that he did it on purpose.
 
Original Equipment Manufacturer.

In reference to software it's the software license that can be bundled with hardware.
 
OEM copies are perfectly legit to sell when sold with hardware. They aren't supposed to sell them alone but it you buy it along with even something as small as a stick or ram or something along those lines they are 100% legit.
