So after a few months, all the angst, and straying away from my comfort zone...

Recently, I had a 2014 Gibson LPJ that I got at a steal, and it was an incredible guitar - not just "for the money", but was a great build, smooth as silk (even with a satin finish), and sounded and played incredibly. I couldn't believe a cheap MIA guitar could be that good. Still, though, it was in my "comfort zone", and as I get older, my stupid brain is like "well, you gotta try something different, so as to not miss out on anything".

Stupid brain :annoyed:

So, what was next? Well, for a few years, I had always wanted to try some Gretsches, but knowing the "real" ones were outside of my budget, I starting messing with a few Electromatics. I really was intrigued by the Center Block series, so I tried and bought this:

Looked great, played great; sounded meh, and was heavy as hell. I don't mind heavy guitars, but overall it just wasn't what I wanted in a Gretsch. So...

...I think, well, maybe a more traditional, hollowbody Gretsch will do the trick, so enter this into the picture:

And, it was gorgeous. Great overall build, sounded prettttttty good. Thought this was gonna be it.

It turned out to be the least-stable guitar I have ever owned :(. It seemed like every day or two, the action would be totally out of whack - I would adjust it, it would be fine. Two days later, the string are buzzing like hell. Adjust it again; fine. Next day, action too high, Adjust again...over three weeks, I must have adjusted the bridge height and/or truss rod six or seven times. Back she went, and no more Gretsch for me, at least until I can afford a Pro Line Jet or the like...

I then explored the possibilities of various Wolfgangs. The newest MII versions are horrible. Haven't seen the MIMs. The earlier MIJ/MIC I liked. If I ever DO get one, it will be a Peavey.

So the next one was completely out of left field - shockingly fat neck, good Dimarzios, and a great balance altogether, so I took it home:

Yeah, again, I was shocked, too. Ugly as sin, but well put-together, and sounded good. I noticed some fret buzz, but figured I would just dial it out.

I couldn't :gah:

Too bad. Buh-bye.

So I played a whole bunch of different guitars, and while doing so, remembered mentioning here in another thread re: one thing that I wanted to improve on, and that is not being so tight-gripped on my fretting hand. I have always said that I liked fatter necks, and comfort-wise I do, but I wondered if maybe those bigger necks were helping facilitate the "death grip". I then started playing some thinner-necked guitars, including some Ibanez RGs that I thought I'd never get along with. I was surprised to find that I was not turned off by those.

:hmm:
