slap bass? i think I get it now

i used to think of it as the two-handed tapping of bass because people over used the shit out of it. But then I heard some very sparce slap in this song and it makes sense. Its just a rythm accent like a drummer would use, played on top of the bass line.

hard to hear on YOuTUBE but maybe you can

yeah thats what I mean...he uses it like during a rest where you wouldnt play any note he throws a "gank" in there. very cool tool if done right.
i dont wanna here 50 million "ganks" in between 50 million notes the way the top bass session players seemed to do in the 80s. ruins everything.

I consider myself to be fairly decent on the bass, but slapping is one thing I have never been able to do. Not even one single note can I get to sound right. It always sounds like I'm just hitting the bass.

I have big respect for guys that can do slap and pop well. I can't get that down for the life of me.

I don't care what anybody says about Duran Duran, John Taylor is a monster bass player and he wrote some incredible bass lines.

Slapping is a tool that's nice to have- but sooo many bassists overuse it to death trying to be Victor Wooten or Marcus Miller (or Larry Graham-the origionator). If it works for the song, or part, or fill- so be it-use it. It's annoying as hell if over-used though, to me. Not all basses are designed for it, either- it won't give you the right snap. Eg- A Cort Curbow4 will, but a Carvin IC6 won't, despite being a superior instrument in nearly every way.

It's a tool that is nice to have, on the right bass, at the right time , but don't do as many bassists do, & sacrifice everything else. & if you aren't concerned about it, fine- much more to the instrument than that anyways.

& while you won't be as noticed, you will probably be a better bassist.
