Feeling helpless while a loved one self-destructs is emotional torture. What a sad place she has put herself into.

I can relate in a way. My Dad had to have gall bladder/spleen surgery when he was about 69. The surgeon told him (in front of me so I could hear) that he had never seen a liver in as bad a shape as his in a living human being. He also said if he did not drink another drop of alcohol he could possibly live 5 more years. If he continued he would be dead inside a year. First thing he did on the way home from the hospital (per his CC receipts I found later) was hit the liquor store for $75.00 of cheap vodka. He was dead in less than a year.
